5/5 Review: Dragonbane by Sherrilyn Kenyon

Out of all the mysterious boarders who call Sanctuary home, no one is more antisocial or withdrawn than Maxis Drago. But then, it's hard to blend in with the modern world when you have a fifty foot wingspan.
Centuries ago, he was cursed by an enemy who swore to see him fall. An enemy who took everything from him and left him forever secluded.
But Fate is a bitch, with a wicked sense of humor. And when she throws old enemies together and threatens the wife he thought had died centuries ago, he comes back with a vengeance. Modern day New Orleans has become a battleground for the oldest of evils. And two dragons will hold the line, or go down in flames, in Dragonbane, the next explosive Dark-Hunter novel from #1 New York Timesbestselling author Sherrilyn Kenyon.

**********

We return to Sanctuary where we meet the dragon Maxis Drago and his Amazon life mate Seraphina, whom he hasn’t seen in a couple of hundred years due to her humiliating him in front of her Queen. This book starts off with plenty of action that doesn't stop until the last page. The world building unfolds with the perfect spacing - not too much information revealed at once, nor too little. The Dark Hunters are immortal warriors with a terrible curse hanging over their heads. Max is a dragon that was cursed long ago and has had to live without his life mate.

You've have to love a hunky Alpha male who knows how to wield his weapon and is the perfect balance of dominance and sweet. You ALSO have to love a strong, independent woman who knows that she messed  up. Max and Sera are both loyal to the bone, making them the perfect fighting force against the evil that threatens all their lives.

I was so invested in the outcome of Max and Sera struggles, it was almost hard to breathe as things became more complicated and the happily-ever-after seemed further out of reach. Sherrilyn Kenyon knows how to write characters you will root for with just the right amount of tension to make the ending a true triumph. Everything about these characters were different  including the villain, who happened to be the Amazon Queen.New characters, lots of interaction with ones we've already met. New mysteries added to the wealth of intrigue already built up in previous books. This stands alone as a suspenseful drama, with heated romance, but it also is a part of a larger story arc with the other novels that slowly build up a gripping backstory and create a brand new mythic soap opera of ancient gods caught up in passions of love and hate.

Sherrylin's Dark hunter series is without a doubt one of the best series in the paranormal romance genre. You would think that a series that is 25+ books in there would be a lull in the story or that the writing might become repetitive but this could not be further from the truth with this series. As with all the dark hunter books this one will have you laughing and crying and holding your breath. Sherrylin is brilliant at creating a totally believable world where with each story things start to become clearer and ties start to form. My favorite parts of these books is when all the past characters come together and you remember why you fell in love with this series to start with.
