5/5 Review: FALLING FREE by Tina Wainscott

Falling Free is the 3rd in the Falling Fast series by Tina Wainscott - I will start by saying I have not read the previous installments and didn't flounder at all with this book. Falling Free is simply amazing!

We meet Grace - she has made it her life's goal to prove her father innocent and have his prison sentence overturned. She became a lawyer with that being her soul purpose in life. She is dealt a healthy blow when her father tells her to stop and that he is in fact guilty. This stuns her and she is left without a purpose.

Well, trying to figure out what she wants to do with herself, she meets Artemis Tanner - a drift car racer. When Tanner and Grace meet fireworks ensue. But can Tanner stay in one place long enough to win Grace's heart? Can Grace learn to trust him? This is the story of how they find themselves and each other.

Ms. Wainscott's writing is wonderful, her characters are strong and believable. If you are in the market for a great story - I strongly recommend Falling Free.

Suzanne Brockmann on “Home Fire Inferno”

I write about a SEAL team, so my military heroes tend to show up in a rather large group! And although Home Fire Inferno focuses on Navy SEAL Dan Gillman (whose wife, Jenn, is about to have a baby!), you’ll also see quite a bit of Izzy Zanella, along with Mark Jenkins, Jay Lopez, and the inimitable Senior Chief Stan Wolchonok. Readers will also get to meet the SEAL with the face of a serial killer and the intriguing nickname HoboMofo . . . who happens to live with his mother and his ten-year-old daughter. But all the SEALs in this story would be in full agreement that family is the one word answer to the question “What is your military hero/ine most excited about returning to after active duty?”

Honoring love and family is a long-held tradition in the U.S. Navy. A ritual called the First Kiss is still practiced for ships returning to their homeports. (Google “US Navy first kiss tradition” to see pictures that will brighten your day!) All married sailors, officer and enlisted alike, can take part in a lottery in which the winner is the first to disembark, greet, and kiss his or her spouse after many months away from home. It’s a huge deal, with boatloads of ceremony involved. This is the big, bad U.S. Navy, part of the most powerful military force in the world. But everyone—from admirals to seamen recruits—unabashedly recognize that the most important part of their homecoming lies in the arms of the men and women waiting for them.

Julie Ann Walker on “Hot As Hell”

Despite running missions to the ass ends of the earth, Navy SEAL Michael “Mad Dog” Wainwright from Hot as Hell is a family man at heart.  Born and raised in Atlantic City, he longs for the sea when he’s conducting sorties in the desert.  Hankers for the boardwalk when he’s belly deep in some bog in the jungle.  And craves a slice of Tony Bologney’s pizza when he’d eaten one-too-many MREs – meals ready to eat – to count.  So when Michael gets time off from missiles and mayhem, you can bet your bottom dollar he races home to be with his two brothers and his mother and father. Together, they make a night of pizza, walks along the boardwalk, salt water taffy, and some tossing of the dice at one of Atlantic City’s seaside casinos.  It’s a bit of normalcy in a life that’s otherwise filled by the extraordinary.  A bit of fun in a world Michael knows can be full of horror and woe.  A bit of life to go along with so much death.  Michael “Mad Dog” Wainwright lives for those moments, for those homecomings.  They’re what he fights for…

Catherine Mann on “In Plain Sight”

Tech Sergeant Gavin “Bubbles” Novak isn’t known for a sparkling wit, but his steely eyed focus on the job has made him the go-to guy in the most stressful of pararescue missions. Until a fateful military mission leaves him blind and ends his Air Force career. With nowhere else to go, he returns to his small Kentucky hometown with his seeing-eye dog and takes a job as a 9-1-1 operator. His first day on the job brings a voice from the past, the only woman who has ever blasted through that tough shell to reach his soul - his high school sweetheart Stacie Curry. She’s being stalked by her abusive ex-husband and he’s broken into her home.

Stacie Curry thought she made the safe choice in marrying the hometown boy rather than leaving with brooding outsider Gavin. But her decision has led to a nightmare existence. Since her divorce, she is stalked and terrorized by her ex. When she calls 9-1-1, she’s stunned to hear Gavin’s deep voice on the other end of the line. And when she sees him face to face afterward, she’s shocked – and heartbroken – to learn he’s blind. But she soon finds Gavin will let nothing stand in the way of protecting her.

Learning to overcome the loss of his sight and his Air Force career, Gavin comes to her rescue, protecting her, helping expose her ex … and rekindling their old romance with a blazing-hot flame.

Tina Wainscott on “Beauty and the Marine”

Once the gorgeous golden boy of his small Georgia town, Marine Griff Tate returned home scarred from an explosion in Afghanistan. Now, the only people he sees are his family and the out-of-towners he takes hunting and fishing on their private acreage. Griff thinks that all he wants is to be with his family in the comfort of the woods in which he spent his youth.  He can barely look at himself in the mirror—how can he expect a woman to want to wake up to his ugly mug every morning?  But even a battle-scarred veteran needs love … even if he doesn’t know it!

Anne Elizabeth on “SEALed with Passion”

Navy SEAL LT Cmdr Jonah Melo has his feet back on American soil. That's when the itchy-need begins--to get back into the action and/or to fill his time with something useful. Luckily, he's got an opportunity to jump in and do a building project for the Wounded Warriors. This particular house is special because it's going to be the home of his long-time friend Kevin Toms. Melo has participated in a lot of builds before, but seeing his buddy in a home that enables his happiness and mobility is going to top the list of experiences. If only he could be as blessed in love as he is in friendship.

M.L. Buchman on “NSDQ”

U.S. Army Captain Lois Lang knows only one thing, flying combat search-and-rescue helicopters into the heart of the battlezone and getting her people back out. And when a CSAR mission gone wrong forces her to make the ultimate sacrifice—for her it isn’t a choice. Her crew and the wounded they’ve recovered always come first.
But the battle that awaits her will test her limits. She can learn to walk again, but she must discover the strength to face what to do when she can’t fly.

Kate SeRine on “Torn”

During his deployment, the thing that kept Joe Dawson going was the thought of returning home to Sadie—his best friend since childhood and the woman he’s been in love with for as long as he can remember. But a mission gone wrong has left him scarred—both inside and out. And when he and Sadie finally share an unexpected moment of passion, Joe has a hard time believing that Sadie could have feelings for the damaged man he has become and worries that her heart is being ruled by pity and not love.

Those doubts are compounded now that he’s set to resume his duty as a deputy sheriff. With his father and three brothers already making names for themselves with successful law enforcement careers, the pressure’s on, leaving Joe torn between honoring the family tradition and leaving behind the only career he’s ever known outside the military.

Lea Griffith on her inspiration for “War Games”

There are many things I could tell you about my stepfather. He married a wonderful woman with a tiny, 6 year old girl from a previous marriage who still wondered why her daddy couldn’t be a daddy—and then he became a stepfather and helped raise her. A strict disciplinarian he nevertheless was giving to a fault. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War. (Side note: he refused to call it a “conflict”. He always said, “When people kill people like we killed people that’s a goddamn war.” Finally, I guess I’d tell you he was one of the most tortured souls I have ever known. In the midst of his torment, the nightmares and flashbacks, the anger that always simmered just below the surface there was a strength to be admired and it is that strength that makes him one of my heroes.

My stepdad was born and raised in a little town called Tennille, Georgia. It’s nothing but country with field after field of corn and cotton and country folk living a simple life. When young men came of age they either went into the family business of cotton and corn or they went into the service and this is the route William Thomas Howell, Jr. took. He entered the Air Force and lost any innocence he might have once had running tactical rescue and recovery missions in Vietnam of which he would say nothing about. I remember asking him what war was like and he refused to answer. Then one day when he was talking about Vietnam—not the war, mind you, but the country itself—I asked him what he missed the most about home when he was “in country”. He smiled and for some reason my gut clenched and I remember wishing I hadn’t asked the question. But then he answered and I had to smile with him. “Lightning bugs,” he said. “Lightning bugs and Coca Cola.”

My stepdad passed away almost nine years ago. He has missed the births of several of his grandchildren and the marriage of one of his children. But in the midst of his loss, he left a legacy that includes perseverance, giving and most of all a love of Coca Cola.

Oh, and the lightning bugs. I cannot forget the tiny bugs with the “lights in their butts”. It seems the smallest bug made a light big enough for my stepdad to yearn for. They make me smile every time spring comes. And yes, because he made me smile with his longing for lightning bugs I taught my girls how to catch them and put them in a mason jar for a little while before you release them. This more than anything else has helped me remember him.

The courageous men of USA Today bestselling author Tina Wainscott’s Justiss Alliance series never give up and never make a promise they can’t live up to—especially when love is on the line.

The only commitment Saxby Cole has ever made is to the SEALs. He follows a long line of Southern charmers who swear monogamy isn’t in their blood. He’s never met a woman who made him want to swear his allegiance—until, while undercover for a Justiss Alliance assignment, he finds a woman who makes him think twice.

When Jennessy Shaw’s boyfriend dumps her right before their vacation to a hedonistic Caribbean resort, she goes without him to explore her wild side. Throwing caution to the wind, she propositions Saxby—only to suffer his gentle rejection.

When she wakes in Saxby’s room with no memory of the night before, Jennessy discovers his real purpose: to sniff out an operation where women like her are drugged and prostituted to resort guests. She goes from victim to his investigative partner . . . but getting too close to the sexier-than-sin Saxby may be her wildest move yet.

EXCERPT

“You sure didn’t ‘love me ’til you die’ when you were ‘salving’ your injured-football-star ego by sticking your dick in every receptacle you could find . . . Well, that’s how your roommate said it.” She slid past him to the window seat next to his, pushing her purse beneath the seat and jamming a novel into the pocket in front of her.
Sax sat back down, trying to appear as though he weren’t listening. Please, don’t start crying. I can’t take a woman crying, especially over some cheating asshat.
“As a matter of fact, yes, I am still going. Remember how I suggested we explore our wild side to spice up our relationship?” Her mouth turned up in a sassy, smack-him-in-the-gut grin. “Well, I’m taking my own advice. Without you. With my room on the Wild side. Have a nice life, Lane.” She turned off her phone and sat back with a huff. Nope, she wasn’t going to cry.
“Drinks?”
Sax turned to the scantily clad steward who gave him a polite smile. No sign of the spark he usually garnered from a female. Dayum, being Mr. Boring was hard to get used to. Definitely an ego killer. He nodded for his seatmate to order first.
“God, yes,” she said. “What do you have?”
“Beer, wine, and our famous Decadence rum punch.”
“Punch me, please.”
“Make it two,” Sax said. He started to turn toward his seatmate but stopped. Don’t talk to her. Be like Knox, who would be sitting here sinking into his own dark thoughts.
The steward brought their drinks as the pilot announced they were readying the plane for takeoff.
His neighbor drained about half her drink in one long pull. Images of rubbing all that tension out of her shoulders as she let out groans of pleasure floated through his mind, that soft-looking hair tickling his arms . . . screech—the sound of tires grinding to a halt shoved the image out of his brain. Forget that.
The plane taxied down the runway, then lifted off. Sax didn’t catch himself in time to stop from glancing at the woman next to him. She’d finished her drink. He handed her his with a smile. “I think you need this more than I do. I haven’t touched it.”
She was about to politely refuse, but that impish smile turned up the corners of her mouth. “You’re right, thanks. I guess you heard all that”—she rolled her eyes—“drama.”
Sax gestured for her to give him the empty glass. He felt the frames of his glasses slide down his nose and, per Vivi’s instructions, shoved them back with his forefinger to the bridge in a graceless gesture. “Yeah, that sucks,” he said, forcing himself to focus on his investment magazine.
She took a sip of her drink. “I almost backed out. When I wanted to explore my wild side, I thought I’d be doing it in a safe way, you know? With the guy I’ve been dating since our junior year of high school. But the room is paid for, and the flights are nonrefundable.” She flashed the intriguing smile that showed off perfect white teeth. “I decided to go anyway.”
“Good for you. I say it’s his loss.” He looked up toward the cabin ceiling. You gotta be frickin’ kidding me. Who up there is laughing his ass off right now? Fate, karma, cruel trickster, putting a woman who could use some self-esteem boosting right next to me. He loved nothing more than to treat a woman to a weekend of adoration and pampering so that she forgot what’s-his-face and regained her joie de vivre. Of course, he always made it clear that it was only for a weekend or however long he was in town.

Back off, boy. You’re on the job. Then he remembered what she was seeing when she looked at him. No worries that she’d be interested in him anyway. “Just watch your drink while you’re there, ’kay?” He turned back to his magazine.

Excerpt:

It was damn annoying how Kye's attention kept straying to Kasabian through the night, how her mind kept replaying their conversation. Women gawked and flirted, but he didn't flirt back. She was glad to see him leave while she finished up with a client session after closing time.
Her relief evaporated when she stepped into the well-lit parking lot and spotted him leaning against a deep yellow sports car. As though he were waiting for her. The thought fluttered in her chest. Not helping, the Lotus's license plate read NOANGEL, and black angel wings spread across the hood. She told herself it was enough to enjoy the view. Men who took care of their bodies, working out enough to build muscle without looking too jacked up, were eye candy. No calories in looking.
The thick black heels of her short boots clunked on the asphalt. She felt such an odd pull toward him that she forced herself to give him a brief smile and bypass him.
“Aren’t you hot in that?” he asked, gesturing as though he were wearing a jacket.
She slowed to a stop in front of him. “Only when I dance.” No matter how warm she got, she never took off the black leather jacket with her patches and studs.
“And you didn’t dance.” He tilted his head, giving her an oh-my-gods-stop-my-heart pout. “Pity.”
"Are you flirting with me?"
"You make it sound like a crime."
"What you're hearing is surprise. I know it's painful for Caidos to feel desire, punishment you unfairly suffer because your angel forefathers fell to human temptation. Don't worry. As a therapist, I'm sworn to secrecy," she added. "Caido clients tell me it's easier to shut down their desire. Yet you do … feel desire."
"Ah, so you did sense it."
"You threw me off back at the bar. First that you were flirting, then that you asked me outright to feel you. I mean, to sense your feelings. You're different."
"Very. I don't usually flirt." He let his gaze drift down over her black leather skirt and fishnet stockings. His eyes met hers again, jumpstarting her heart. "You have a strange effect on me."
Ditto, buddy. Which made her all too aware that they were outside alone together.
His chuckle rolled across her skin. "Don't worry, I'm not waiting out here to pounce on you."
She'd forgotten how Caidos could pick up others' emotions. "But you are waiting for me."
"Yes, I am."
"You're not going to ask me out or anything, are you? Because I don't date." He didn't say anything, which made for a really awkward few seconds. "It's a general rule, nothing personal. If … that's what you were going to ask." She would have thwapped herself on the forehead if it wouldn't look stupid.
And, of course, as a Caido, he picked up everything she was feeling, which put a damned incredibly sexy smile on his face. "As much as I'd love to hook up with you, it's not feasible. Or wise."
He'd love to hook up with her. She tried to staunch her reaction to those words.
He gave her a sympathetic smile. "The love guru doesn't date? That seems sad."
She debated being obtuse but decided it was better that he knew she wasn't just playing hard to get. "Being involved with someone interferes with my abilities. The drama and distraction, even if things are going well, takes over my mind. All I get is noise when I read someone."
"And that terrifies you. Why?"
She really hated that he could read her. "Helping people is important to me."
"Which leads beautifully to the reason I'm waiting for you. The Caido/Deuce couple who came in and greeted you like you were their best friend, who danced together, and kissed … you helped them, didn't you?"
Kye had watched them snuggling together on the dance floor with just a tiny bit of longing. "Sorry, client confidentiality."
He rubbed his chin. "So you did help them. The only way they could be together is by doing the Essex. I assume you know about the exchange of essences that balances the Caido so he's not as sensitive to her emotions. Because it only temporarily ease his pain, a long-term relationship would mean that her essence would eventually be depleted. No self-respecting Caido would do that to someone he cares about. So how is it that they're together?"
She could only give him a general answer. "I've come up with a way to make the Essex permanent."
He pushed away from the car, interest crackling off him as he came closer. "Tell me more."
She fought the instinct to back up a step. "I've had a few mixed-Caido couples approach me about circumventing the pain. They hadn't meant to fall in love, but now they wanted to be together. I tried several different spells and magick devices, but nothing worked."
He crossed his arms in front of him and rocked back on his heels. "And you take it very hard when you can't fix someone."
"You get that from me too?"
"I suppose we both bear a similar burden in picking up feelings we have no business sensing. How does it work?"
She laid one of her hands on top of the other and let her fingers barely settle between each other. "With the Essex, you're limited to how much essence you can exchange, kind of the way my fingers can't slide together. That's why it's temporary. The Cobra, which I named for the tantric position, allows both essences to reach fully toward each other, like this." She laced her hands together, fingers straight so that they formed an X. "This starts the bonding process. The last step is when both parties actually pull each other's essence into their souls, permanently locking them together." Her fingers wrapped over her hands as though in prayer. "At least, I think it's permanent. The first couple did it four months ago and it's still holding strong."
"Why haven't I heard about this magick of yours? The Caido community should be buzzing."
"There are some side effects I'm still working out. The Caido is bombarded by every emotion he's ever repressed. It can be intense. One Caido even experienced a resurgence of buried memories."
Kasabian's eyes shimmered. "Buried memories?"
"It apparently caused some big problems, but he couldn't give me any details beyond that. He just wanted me to know that it happened."
He went silent for a few moments, rubbing his fingers across his mouth. "Can you do it so a Caido can simply experience desire?"
"Only if you have a committed partner who wants to be permanently bonded to you. Because that's what it does."
"That would not be a good thing. For any woman."
"Why?" The mystery of him pulled at her, the dark desire she'd sensed.
"Oh, love, there you go, needing to help even though you know you should run the other way." He lowered his chin, the street light reflecting off his razor-sharp jawline. "And you should. I'm forty ways fucked up."
She swallowed. No one had ever made her this off-balanced. "I do want to help. Too many messed up people are not only suffering but inflicting their misery on others."
"I assure you that I'm not inflicting my anything on anyone." He reached out with the back of his hand and brushed it down her cheek. "As much as I'd like to."
She stumbled back, his touch curling throughout her body. "I should go."
Hunger flashed in his eyes. "Yes, you should."
Go, run, and never look back.

Jaime Rush’s MAGIC POSSESSED Interview & giveaway

1. What is one of your favorite Myths/legends to write about?

I’ve never purposely used a myth as a basis of a story. At the core of most of my stories, though, is the battle between good and evil. At least in romance fiction, good always wins!

2. If you could live back in time, what time period would you choose and why?

I’m not sure I’d want to live in any other time. No air conditioning? Computers? Horrible plagues that decimated entire villages? No, thanks! LOL It would be fun to jump back to earlier times for a visit, even back when dinosaurs roamed. Just a quick peek, experience the place, and then back home!
3. Have you ever come across a song that might fit the theme of one of your books? The one that immediately comes to mind is Garth Brooks’s remake of Kiss’s "Hard Luck Woman." It often finds its way onto my heroine’s playlists, because they’ve usually been through a lot of tough stuff by the time the book begins. Of course, I put them through a lot more during the story! But at the end, they have grown above their baggage and found their happily ever after—both with themselves and their heroes.4. Do you remember what you felt when you had your first kiss?I remember feeling like I was so old, fifteen, and never been kissed! Horrors. I do remember that it felt wondrous, though I couldn’t tell you much about the kiss itself. 5. What was the most creative pick up line you've ever used on someone or someone used on you?A guy once said, "Hey, you dropped something. Your smile." It worked, at least to make me smile. It wasn’t a pickup line, per se, or at least I didn’t go hang out with the guy. He was working at one of the stores on Duval Street in Key West. But it was a good reminder to keep a smile on my face. 6. When writing do you have a playlist of music you like to listen to? What are a couple songs on it?I create multiple playlists for each character, depending on the mood of the scene I’m writing. For example, I have poignant, character, suspense and sexy playlists. For Saxby, my current hero in the book I’m writing now (WILD NIGHTS, Nov 2014), a couple of his "character" songs are: "Show Me What I’m Looking For," by Carolina Liar and "Home," by Marc Broussard.7. What do you do when you think nobody is watching?Stare off into the distance (usually I’m either plotting something or going over my gigantic To-Do list).

They are the Hidden.
Not quite human. Far from normal.
And never, ever safe . . .

TOO HOT TO HANDLE

Her brother was mysteriously murdered with no witnesses, clues-or motives. Yet Violet Castanega knows he won't be the last to die unless she seeks help. But the Hidden's law enforcement won't come to the aid of her rowdy dragon clan, and the only person who will listen to her is one tough cop. Violet has tangled with him before, and it got rough. This time, it's getting hot . . .

TOO CLOSE FOR COMFORT

Powerful Guard member Kade Kavanaugh has been ordered to take out Violet Castanega. While assassination orders don't come with explanations, his instincts scream that killing the feisty beauty is wrong. Now Kade must put his career, not to mention his life, on the line to save her. But as the passion-and the danger-heat up between Kade and Violet, can they survive the darkest magick of all?

MAGIC POSSESSED Excerpt

Kade watched Violet Castanega's sassy little ass sashay through the lobby to the entrance. He could tell she wanted to look back at him; she started to but snapped her head straight, pushed the door open, and slammed it shut behind her. Wow, did she look different from the last time he'd seen her.

When he'd arrested Arlo six years ago, someone jumped on his back, wrapping her long legs around his waist and arms over his shoulders. He'd known instantly it was a woman—her breasts crushed against his back had been the first clue. Her shrill voice blasting his ear with, "Let him go!" the second.

He'd reached back to dislodge her and accidentally grabbed her boob. Okay, maybe he'd lingered on that firm and soft and luscious mound of flesh. She'd nailed him in the eye with her elbow. It was only after he'd thrown her off that he realized it was Violet, the once-lanky, scrappy teenager he'd seen during an earlier investigation into Arlo's activities.

Before she could launch another attack, he reminded her that assaulting an officer would result in arrest, and she backed off. She'd been wearing tattered jeans, a muddy tank top and boots, and smelled of earth. A red scarf covered her dark brown hair, but her braid had hung down her back and tendrils of hair had escaped. To his surprise, her untamed self had tugged at the rebellious, wild side he'd had to stuff deep inside. And it still did apparently.

The spark between them was bizarre. Never would he nail a Fringer, doubly so, since they were all Dragons. Not even one with silky hair falling over her shoulders and a long, lean body. He returned to the pit, where several pairs of eyes were on him.

"Did you spank her for giving you that shiner, Kavanaugh?" Treach called out, followed by a chorus of guffaws.

"I think you were a little too distracted and let her get the best of you," Baker said. "You wanted to spank her."

Kade shook his head, learning long ago that to respond was the weaker action. He headed to his office, a tantalizing image of Violet sprawled across his lap while he spanked that lush behind flashing into his mind. That was not helping his hard-on.

His sister, Mia, sidled up next to him. "What was that about?"

"The shiner?" He waved it off. "She was fast, nailed me while I was dealing with her brothers." He wasn't getting into the boob part.

"No wonder you never mentioned who'd given you that black eye. These chauvinistic bastards will never let you live that down." She shot them a derisive glance and lowered her voice. "But that's not what I was talking about. There was an erotic vibe in the way you dealt with her, and ooh, the way the mist in your eyes is swirling now."

He kept all expression from his face, including annoyance at her observation. "I was making sure she didn't cause a scene. Nothing more."

She gave him a skeptical look, which he deserved because he knew exactly what she was talking about. He didn't have an answer for it either, because no way was he attracted to a Castanega. Even a sexy, sassy one. "Take note, little sister. With people like her, you've got to establish dominance immediately. The moment they think they've got the upper hand, they do."

The usual light of admiration returned to her eyes, the way it did whenever he imparted his wisdom to her. "I see that. You didn't let her get away with anything, while she completely got away from me. That's why you're one of the best Vegas in the department."

He loved her admiration, and he didn't. He knew too well how betrayed one felt when the object of your admiration fell and shattered to pieces. She was too young to remember when all the years of their father's sterling service to the Guard exploded in scandal. A woman had made wild accusations about a member of the Concilium, the government entity that oversaw the Hidden and instituted the rules. Somehow their father had gotten involved, emotionally, maybe romantically. Stewart Kavanaugh had helped the woman escape, and both were killed.

Everyone had kept the ugly details from Mia, then age seven. As far as she knew, a crazy woman escaped and attacked their father. Weeks later, their mother had taken her life, unable to deal with the betrayal and scandal. She was a selfish, weak woman who cared more about her reputation than her young daughter.

On top of that, Kade had been demoted to Argus. Some people complained that he'd been fast-tracked to Vega because of his father's influence and that he didn't deserve his position because his reckless behavior made the Guard look bad. Maybe that was true, but they conveniently forgot the thirty years that he was a Vega who closed almost every case. Five years of towing the line, exemplary work, and living by the rules had earned him Vega again. Humiliating, belittling years that changed him from cavalier and edgy to a sterling, model officer.

"Kavanaugh," Ferro called out, leaning out of his office. He saw Mia and added, "Kade." Ferro remained standing once Kade closed the door behind him, looking at the map with the tacks on it. "Take the Castanega woman out."

The words hit Kade like a cold slap, so out of the blue he had to clarify in case he'd misheard. "'Take her out'? You mean kill her?"

"I thought you were beyond needing the terms explained."

Kade bristled. "For barging into your office?"

The corner of Ferro's mouth twitched. "You're questioning the order?"

"It seems extreme, sir."

"It has nothing to do with her conduct here." Ferro lifted the paper she'd brought in. "We've been watching her for a while now. These killings are connected to her, and her act about being concerned is just that." He let the paper drift down to his desk. "Worthless pieces of trash, all of them. A blight on Crescent society."

Those words prickled across Kade's skin. He'd heard them spoken about his father after the debacle.

Ferro continued. "Their skirmishes act as population control, but in the age of the Internet and instant news, they threaten to expose what we are. Eliminating her will serve as a warning to anyone else involved."

The Guard didn't have people killed for less than a good reason. Kade wasn't always privy to the reasons, and frankly, he'd never been concerned about it. Orders were orders. Still, the prospect of whacking Violet sank his stomach. Because he'd felt her body against his? And felt arousal?

Think with your right head, Kavanaugh.

Vegas were akin to Special Ops, called in when the mission was dangerous, tricky, or required a special skill. He had to trust his superior. He would carry out his task as ordered.

"I'll take care of it, sir."

~ DELETED SCENE ~

Sometimes authors see a scene or a character before they know much about the book that’s poking at them to be written. Ruby Salazaar, from DRAGON AWAKENED, came to me in full color … but she changed during the process of story planning. I thought it would be fun to share my original version of her, along with a peek at who she ended up being, with my friends here at Bitten by Reviews.

OLD OPENING:
Ruby felt the hand grab her ass as she walked past the table covered in empty beer and shot glasses. John Jr. was obviously trying to impress his friends. She stopped in her tracks and took a deep breath before turning to lance him with the look of death.
"I'm sorry, sweet Ruby, I jus' can't help myself when that tight, round ass of yours goes saunterin' by."
She didn’t recognize the two other men at the table. She ran Jake's Bar and only waited tables when necessary. "I guess you forgot about that broken finger you got last time you grabbed my sweet ass." She gave him a forced smile that bled maliciousness and crooked her finger. "Shall I remind you?"
He yanked his hand back. Then he looked at his friends and tried to laugh it off. "She's kidding. Such a kidder. Woman's got a body to taunt and a mouth to torment a man."
"She don't look like she's kidding," the beefy one with his shoe propped on the edge of the scarred table said. At the very moment she thought he looked familiar, his eyes narrowed. "Wait a minute. Ruby? Ruby Salazaar?"
It clicked. "Tommy Canton."
"I'll be darned. I went to middle school with this here girl." He pushed to his feet and approached her like he was going to give her a hug.
She put her hands up to ward him off. "You are not to going to hug me like we're long lost friends. Unless you count cutting off my braid, gluing my books together, and leaving me with more bruises than Mary Lou Petroski had hickeys as friendship."
He chuckled. "You still got that braid, too. Always thought it was the color of honey." When she glared at the hand that was reaching out to touch that braid, he dropped his hands to his side. "Aw, come on. That was a long time ago."
"Sixteen years isn't long enough to forget the torment."
He slumped back into his seat. "I only did it 'cause your uncle paid me to."
She was sure her eyebrows jumped to her hair line. "What?"
"You didn't know? He got Jimmy and Bosley to do it, too. Five bucks a week, something about making you stronger for it. Five bucks was a lot of money to a twelve year old. Truth was, I thought you were a spitfire, a cute one at that. Guess I went a little too far, huh?"
She walked away, stunned and yet, suspicious. Still, why would he make up something like that? It sounded like something her uncle might pull, eccentric that he was. But why?
Jake was wiping glasses behind the bar. The reformed alcoholic who owned a bar. His paunch wasn't from beer, that was for sure. "They giving you a hard time?" he asked, not looking particularly concerned. He knew she could handle herself. That's why he paid her so much to stick around when all the other bar babes hit the road after a few months. Once he'd even admitted that the guys came here because she hit back, either with fists or with her smart mouth. She was fricking entertainment. She earned every penny of her overblown salary.
He set down one glass hard on the counter, his watery gaze on her. "Uh oh. You got that look again, the one that costs me money."
The look that said she'd had it. Every time, he bribed her with a salary raise, and she hated to admit she sold out. Problem was, she had no idea what she wanted to do with her life. Teaching women self-defense at the gym was the only thing that sparked her soul, but she didn't think it would pay money enough to sustain her hotdogs and canned chili lifestyle. Besides, she liked doing it for free.
The phone rang, and Jake snatched it up in his fat hand. "Jake's Bar … Sure, she's right here." He thrust it at her and mouthed, It's your uncle.
"Were your ears ringing?" she asked to the mouthpiece, skipping right past hello.
"Ruby, I've got trouble."
"Did you piss off one of your new neighbors already? I told you not to hang the magic artifacts all over the yard. Creeps them out."
"It's more than that." He sounded breathless, and the tone in his voice stiffened her body.
"What?"
"She's found us, and there are things I have to tell you."
"She? Who's she?"
"I need you to come to the house now."
Her throat tightened. "Okay. I'll be there in about forty minutes."
His last words were, "Speed."

I wasn’t particularly sold on Ruby being a bar manager, and while I wanted her to be tough, I thought she was a bit too rough in this version. I mean, really, breaking a man’s fingers? Interestingly, I have no idea who the ‘she’ is that her uncle is referring to either.

This is how the opening ended up:

Ah, the smell of fresh paint in the morning.
Ruby stepped out of the office and squinted at the sun reflecting off the windshield of a ’57 Chevy. For a few seconds, a bright mark marred everything she saw, including the Gottlieb Grand Slam 1953 pinball machine that was farther along in the restoration process. Beyond that, five acres filled with memories of climbing cars, dismantling bicycles, and the sound of her mom calling, “Ruby, get off there. You’re going to fall and crack your head open!” To an adventurous seven-year-old: annoying. Now, a sound she’d kill to hear again.
What she didn’t see was her business partner. Typical. She stalked across the gravel, searching the sections of vintage toys, old signage, and then Coca-Cola machines for him.
“Seen Nevin?” she asked Jack, her expert on motorcycle restoration.
He nodded toward the back. “Chewing the fat with a friend.”
“Augh.”
Jack hefted his wrench. “Want me to bust his chops, Miz Ruby? I’ll kick his ass all over the place…if you’ll pardon my French.”
“That’s not French,” she said, trying to ignore the “Miz Ruby” that he wouldn’t stop calling her, along with his flirtatious smile. “Thanks, but he’s my problem.”
She continued on to Nevin’s disorganized side of the yard and found him leaning against one of his junk sculptures, laughing it up with some guy.
“Nevin.” She kept her gaze on him, plastering on a pleasant-but-fake smile for his friend’s benefit. “Our client is picking up the Wayne gas pump at the end of the week, the one that doesn’t look anywhere near ready.”
Nevin rubbed his belly where his shirt rode up and exposed pale, flabby flesh. “You’re good at finding deals and making old stuff look new again.” He gestured to the roof of a 1976 Cadillac Fleetwood he’d fashioned into a table. “How ’bout you do the resto stuff and let me focus on my art?”
“Resto is paying the bills. You haven’t sold one piece yet.”
“Aw, Ruby, you said business is good. Can’t we take it easy for a bit?”
No, she needed to push herself, to fill some need for…something. Her pseudo-uncle Moncrief inherited the Yard, along with her, when her parents were killed in a boating accident fifteen years ago. Because he traveled often performing his magic shows, he couldn’t deal with running the Yard. Ruby had sobbed at the prospect of losing the last tangible tie to her mom, so he made a deal with Nevin’s parents: a half share for managing it.
After graduating high school, she wrested control from Nevin’s father, who proved that being a lovable lackey was in his gene pool. When he passed, Nevin’s mom insisted he step in, hoping to give him direction. He’d been one of the early strays Ruby attracted. While she had the kind of affection one might have for a dumb-but-sweet cousin, she wasn’t going to let him run the business into the ground like his father nearly did.
The man with Nevin said, “Ruby Salazaar, don’t you recognize me?” The wiry guy in a white cotton T and faded jeans gave her an expectant smile. Smoke trailed from the cigarette clamped between his fingers.
“Leo Canton?”
He looked nothing like the afro-haired kid whose parents were part of Mon’s touring troupe. His hair was trimmed short now, round glasses gone. “Been a long time.” He approached her with outstretched arms.
She warded him off. “You are not going to hug me like we’re long-lost friends. Unless you count cutting off my braid and terrorizing me as friendship, which I do not.”
He chuckled, dropping the cigarette and grinding it into the gravel with his heel. “You still got a braid.” His gaze followed it all the way down to her rear. “The color of honey. You nailed me good after I cut it off. I had that black eye for weeks.”
“You deserved every hour of it.” She’d pounded him, the rage so overwhelming it scared her. She pointed to the cigarette. “Didn’t you see the sign? Anyone who drops his butts has to pick them up and put a dollar into the ‘Jar of Bad Behavior.’ Which I use for the cat neuter fund.” She nodded toward two kittens who were racing over to rub against Leo’s ankles.
Leo pulled out his wallet and handed her a fiver. “Still feisty as ever, and a hell of a lot stronger.” He had the gall to clamp his hand over her biceps but pulled away at the murderous glare she gave him.
Nevin made a tsking sound. “She hates to be touched, dude. Some guy grabbed her buttocks once, and she dropped him right to the ground. Dude clutched his cojones all the way outta here, yowling like a girl.” His pride warmed her heart.
“That doesn’t surprise me.” Leo slumped back against the car and crossed his arms over his chest. “You did get the best training on attack and evade, thanks to me.”
“You mean the Hunter/Prey game you and Jimmy used to force me into playing?” The two would start hunting her, prowling the tour buses or the stage equipment. She was always the reluctant prey. Except something inside her actually liked it while the rest of her hated it.
He shrugged. “We only did it ’cause your uncle paid us to.”
What?”
Leo plucked a kitten from midway up his pant leg and set it down. “Five bucks a week. Skills building, he called it.”
“You’re serious?”
“Your uncle did things to protect you. He was super paranoid for some reason.” He peered into her eyes. “You still don’t…” He clamped his mouth shut and waved as he sauntered off. “Nevin, gimme a shout if you find the part for my truck.”
“I still don’t what?” she called after him.
“Have a sense of humor,” Leo said, though she knew that wasn’t what he was going to say.
She pinned Nevin with a glare. “Is this true, about Mon paying kids to torment me?”
He assumed the blank look of the guilty.
Her cell phone rang. “Speak of the devil.” She skipped right past hello. “Were your ears ringing? I’ve got—”
“Ruby, there’s trouble.”
“Did you piss off your new neighbors already? I told you not to hang those weird artifacts all over your front porch. Creeps people out.”
“No, big trouble, ducky. Get over here, quick. There are things I have to tell you, things I should have told you long ago.”
Her throat tightened at the agony in his voice. “Be there in about forty minutes.”
“Speed.”

Watching American Restoration inspired Ruby’s new career. I wanted her to be doing something that meant a lot to her rather than having a job she detested. The resto yard plays in a few scenes, and I liked all the props I could use, especially when a big monster comes to play.
