4/5 Review: House of the Rising Sun by Sherrilyn Kenyon

The eldest son in a family of three boys, Aricles had no desire to be a soldier, even though his fighting skills were among the best in the world. He was more than content on his small Atlantean farm, living a quiet, uneventful life. But when his brother is determined to don a soldier’s uniform, Aricles joins him with a promise to their father to bring his brother home in one piece. What he never counts on is how much their new lives will forever change them, or what the risk of a forbidden love will ultimately cost him.

**********

I haven’t read Styxx  and I was glad I hadn't  since House of The Rising Son is a prequel to Styxx. This story lays the ground work for Styxx's romance, so if you haven't read Styxx yet, read this first. If you have read Styxx, read it again after reading House of the Rising Sun, you will have a brand new love for Styxx's.Sherrilyn Kenyon is one of the best selling authors out here with many of her series intertwining with one another creating a unique reading experience simply not found elsewhere.

This is the love story of the Egyptian goddess, Bathymaas, and the human farmer/warrior, Aricles. I absolutely LOVE this story. Aricles’s chivalry and chaste love for his goddess totally made me smile. It is a beautiful love story that ends in tragedy and completely broke my heart in the process.Bathymaas and Aricles’s story is not over, it is continued in Styxx. If you have an open mind you will be hooked you with ‘House of the Rising Son’, and if not already a fan you will be. I hope you have some vacation time saved up. Kenyon’s character and world building is unique and vividly draws the reader into the stories. I can definitely recommend this book to any reader who enjoys paranormal books.

5/5 Review: Born of Defiance by Sherrilyn Kenyon

Born an Outcast, Talyn Batur has spent the whole of his life fighting against the prejudice of his people. An Andarion without a father is not something anyone wants to be.
But when his companion's brother draws him into a plot against the Andarion crown, he finds himself torn between the loyalty to their planetary government that his mother has beaten into him and his own beliefs of justice and right.
Now, he must decide for himself to remain a pawn of their government or to defy everything and everyone he's ever known to stand up to tyranny. It's a gamble that will either save his life or end it. And when old enemies align with new ones, it's more than just his own life at risk. And more than just his homeworld that will end should he fail, in Born of Defiance, the next League novel from #1 New York Times bestselling author Sherrilyn Kenyon.

**********

It seems like only yesterday when I read my first book from the legendary, Sherrilyn Kenyon.  She has never failed to keep her fans entertained, frustrated and happy all at the same time, an amazing author.

Born of Defiance has major Mr sexy aka Tayln Batur as our hero and the beautiful Felicity that is his soul mate.   Tayln has had to fight for everything he has in life, born to live such a hard life but he shows his true character by always being the honourable soldier.  He believes in his morals and will do everything he can to do the right thing.  He could easily have been a cold hearted thug but instead chose to cherish the love for his mother and vice versa to hold him firm to what matters most.  He has struggled through life and been content with what was given to him.  When Felicity enters his world that all changes.  Forever the solider with morals he now knows there is one person in this world that he would be willingly die for and he will do everything to protect her.  Felicity hasn't lived a glamorous life either but when she meets the sexy Talyn she believes her world is complete.  She has 100% faith in him and like him, she is willing to do anything for him.

I love their story, its a gentle love story that compels you to love everything about both of them.  I also loved the other characters that got to return, even for a few moments.  Born of Defiance allows us to go back in time and remember our old favourites.  We are allowed a few small glimpses of the "old crew" that satisfies your wishes but has you racing to the next page to see what happens next.  This book held surprises for everyone.  I was waiting for Tayln's father to come into the book and for questions to be answered but in true style we were greeted with more questions instead.

Born of Defiance is the 9th book in the League series and I can say without a doubt that she has yet again produced a wonderful story.  Although the book gives us a lot of questions, I have the faith in Sherrilyn that she will fill us in with the missing links in her next book, Betrayal that I cant wait to be released.  Do yourself a favour and grab this book today for an evening of soaking in the memorable story of Tayln and Felicity.

Review: Night Shift four novellas by Nalini Singh, Ilona Andrews, Lisa Shearin & Milla Vane

Four masters of urban fantasy and paranormal romance plunge readers into the dangerous, captivating world unearthed beyond the dark....

New York Times bestselling author Nalini Singh delivers a smoldering story with Secrets at Midnight, as the scent of Baastien Smith's elusive lover ignites a possessiveness in him that
s as feral as it is ecstatic.  And now that he's hound his mate, he'll do anything to keep her..

In #1 New York Times bestselling author Ilona Andrew's novella, Magic Steals, when a woman goes misssing, shape shifting tigress Dali Harimau and jaguar shifter Jim Shrapshire must uncover the truth about the mysterious creatures responsible.

It's seer Makenna Fraziers's first day on the job at Supernatural Protection and investigations, and her first body guarding assignment is more than she bargained for when a leprechaun prince's bachelor party goes every which way but right in national bestselling author Lisa Shearin's Lucky Charms.

From Milla Vane---a warrior princess must tame The Beast of Blackmoor to earn a place among her people. Soon she discovers that the beast isn’t a monster, but a barbarian warrior who intends to do some taming himself.

I thought that Night Shift with four novellas was a great book for people who liked the paranormal fantasy type books. There are many types of  heroes and villains  that make it really interesting and definitely not boring.

Secrets At Midnight :

I thought Bastian a leopard hero and Kirby   a human heroine were  a great couple in their quest for love.

Bastian is  very lovable, kind and patient with Kirby. I like the mystery of who Kirby really is and how the story about her unfolds.

Magic Steals;

I liked  how the hero Jim, a jaguar shifter and security chief and Dale a Tiger shifter work together to find someone who has gone missing. The details are intriguing and well written.

I liked how Jim was amazed and watched how Dale did her magic. He was so supportive and helpful in her quest.

Lucky Charms;

This is chocked full of supernatural beings; lots of variety. You were never bored with all the different  beings and dangerous things going on.

I liked that Mac was thrown right into a dangerous job to find a missing being. There was lots of humor that help even out the evil.

Beast of Blackmoor;

Mala the heroine is trying to help by taming a beast who didn't even know he needed taming.  She knows it is hard but knows she is protected by her goddess.

I like how the hero Kavik learns to trust her so she can turn around the curse he has on him.

Blood Torn by Lindsay J. Pryor interview & Giveaways

 1) What is one of your favourite myths/legends to write about?

Vampires. I became fascinated by them thirty years ago after watching The Little Vampire TV series as a child, then I watched The Lost Boys in my late teens and I was hooked. Sometimes I wish paranormal romance had existed – or at least been available to me – for me to indulge in back when I was a teenager or even in my early twenties (when I started writing Blackthorn). But then again, not having any accessible to me led to me creating and writing what I couldn’t find – hence Blackthorn. So maybe it worked out for the best!

2) Have you ever come across a song that might fit the theme of one of your books?

This is War by Thirty Seconds to Mars probably best echoes the non-romance elements of the series. As for the forbidden love stories, I’d pick Slave to Love by Bryan Ferry. I think it beautifully sums up that intensity of attraction to someone to the point you get so caught up in it that it becomes impossible to escape, almost like an obsession.

3) When writing do you have a playlist of music you like to listen to? What are a couple songs on it?

I don’t listen to music when I’m writing first drafts, but when I’m redrafting or polishing I have background music to set the tone. I listen mainly to rock, 80’s power ballads, that kind of thing. As I mentioned before, I love Thirty Seconds to Mars. I also listen to Kings of Leon, Adam Lambert and Lady Gaga a lot too. Pick any song!

4) What do you do when you think no one is watching?

I talk to myself. No one openly does that, right?

5) What was your favorite childhood book?

The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe. I read it, re-read it, even used to loan it to myself in my self-made library.

6) What is your favorite addition to chocolate?

I love coffee, especially iced coffee, so chocolate always goes down very well with that.

7) Do you have any hobbies or activities you enjoy doing?

Writing is still my main hobby, despite it also being my second job. But I also enjoy reading fiction, indulging in my interest in mythology and watching films. I’m also really into nature and bought a little patch of woodland garden a couple of years ago so I could build homes and havens to encourage and support as much wildlife as possible.

8) Besides your own, what is one of your favorite series to keep up with?

I don’t follow any book series. Ironically, I tend to prefer standalones. The author I’ve read most though is James Herbert. My favourite TV series are Supernatural and The Vampire Diaries. I was also a huge fan of Being Human UK and The X-Files. Away from anything supernatural, I think Dexter is one of the best TV series ever made. I’m going to be starting on the books as soon as I work my way through the rest of my TBR pile.

9) What do you think you would be doing if you weren’t writing?

It makes me break out in shivers just thinking of not writing! I started my first novel when I was nine and, thirty years later, I’ve never looked back. Okay, maybe watch more films, have a social life, stop waking up at three in the morning to scribble notes…

10) We all know about muses…what do you think inspires you to allow your creative juices flowing?

I think when you’re into what you’re writing, that’s the greatest muse of all. I only write what I enjoy writing – and have always written that way. I have no tolerance for being bored. So when my creative juices stop flowing, it’s a sure sign to me that I’m going wrong somewhere. I either rethink what I’m doing or, as has happened many times over the years, I start another project entirely – and the creative juices start flowing all over again.

‘Vampires might bite, honey, but lycans tear.’ Lycan leader, Jask Tao, rules his pack with fierce dedication and demands the same loyalty in return. In the world of Blackthorn, where respect is a rare commodity, Jask has earned his – few dare to cross him, and fewer survive to tell the tale.

When he captures Sophia, a rare serryn witch – whose blood is lethal to vampires – Jask knows just how valuable she can be. Despite her fiery nature, he also can’t shake the feelings that she rouses in him – feelings
that he thought died along with Ellen, his mate.

Sophia knows she has to escape from Jask’s lycan compound – and fast. Inheriting her sister’s serryn powers can only mean one thing – that her family is at risk. She’ll have to get past the dangerously attractive Jask first but, scarred by memories of her mother’s murder, Sophia won’t ever give up.

Sparks fly between Jask and Sophia but, as both her family and the pack come under threat, they might just need each other if they, and their loved ones, are going to stay alive…

In this thrillingly sensual novel, Lindsay J. Pryor returns to the shadowy dystopian world of Blackthorn, where tensions are rising, the risks are high, and the most powerful loves are formed in the face of great
danger.

‘Not only are Pryor’s characters and fathomlessly dark love stories fabulous, but her
continual world building of Blackthorn blows me away.’ Gravetells.com

‘A shining, brilliant new talent in the Paranormal genre!’ CC MacKenzie

‘She writes paranormal romance mixed with urban fantasy the way I like it – clever
world-building, intense characters and no easy options for them to take.’ Nocturnal Book Reviews

About Lindsay

Lindsay J. Pryor has been creating stories since she was nine years old, when she quickly decided that fantasy was more interesting than reality. She thought she’d grow out of it but hasn’t yet.

Despite years of bashing out stories on an old typewriter, it was the death of her father in 2007 that finally
convinced Lindsay to try and become a published author.

“One of the last things my dad said to me was to do what I wanted to do in life. After he passed away, I pulled out all my scribbles from over the years and got back to writing what I loved
most - paranormal romance.”

Lora Leigh Rule Breaker Interview & Giveaway

In RULE BREAKER, Lion Breed and enforcer Rule Breaker has just a few rules he doesn’t break. Not for anything. Not for anyone—like never have sex with a woman outside his own breed, especially a human woman. Especially someone too helpless, too fun loving and too full of life to ever be able to protect herself, let alone help him to protect her.  If the damned animal inside him insists on a mate, then why pick her? A woman who is an easy target and who can be used as a weapon against him at any time.  But what he suspects is mating heat may not be that at all. Just his animal instincts rioting, pacing, irritated whenever he's away from her.  What ensues is a fiery affair that breaks all the rules of mating heat and will eventually endanger his mate with the very rules designed to protect the Breeds—for she’s possibly been working against them…

Q. If you could live back in time, what time period would you choose and why?
I’d choose the early 1800’s. It was a time of growth. A time when adventures and possibilities were so endless. We didn’t have to worry about Global Warming, there was room to stretch, and every day brought something new. We learned more about the world by traveling, and we learned about people by meeting them. It was a less complicated time in many ways. A less hurried time, without the rush-rush-rush we live with today in many ways. Of course, there were none of the conveniences either, so there would definitely be a trade there.

Q. Have you ever come across a song that might fit the theme of one of your books?

Oh, several. One of the most memorable is Wildcard. It was inspired by Leanne Rimes’s “Probably Wouldn’t Feel This Way.” I listened to that song continual while I was writing that book.

Q.Do you remember what you felt when you had your first kiss?

Excited. A little scared. I felt poise on the edge of an adventure, a journey I hadn’t imagined existed. My heart was beating way too fast, I trembling, I was mesmerized. And it was even more wonderful than I had imagined it could be.

Q.What was the most creative pick up line you've ever used on someone or someone used on you?

“The swirl of my tongue will take you places no woman has ever gone before.” The story behind that one is … different. Maybe I should put that in a book?

Q.When writing do you have a playlist of music you like to listen to? What are a couple songs on it?

Oh yes. Unless one particular song has struck my imagination for a story, then my playlist is almost entirely 80’s music but mixed with a little new stuff.
Bonnie Tyler – Bright Eyes
Tina Turner – Holding Out For A Hero
Def Leppard – Love Bites
Those are just a few of the 150 song list.

Q. Besides your own, what is one of your favorite series to keep up with?
Christine Feehan – Carpathian Series
Nalini Singh – Psy-Changeling Series
Kresley Cole – Immortals Series
Christine Warren – Others Series
J.D. Robb – In Death series

Q. What do you think you would be doing if you weren't writing?

That’s a very scary thought actually.

Probably doing my level best to teach my dogs to talk or something totally insane like that. I get very bored very easily unless I’m writing, and I tend to get carried away with unique … umm… projects, if I’m not buried in my imagination. So, I just thank God for the escape He provided me with. Trust me, my family thanks him too, they used to have to deal with me before I began writing. My mother said it wasn’t pleasant. Especially during the years I tried my hand at being a chemist when I’d mix every known household cleaner, shampoo, or liquid compound I could find together. She says I used to get a bit inventive. I personally don’t remember it. She blames the lack of recall on the fumes…

Q. Do you have any hobbies or activities you enjoy doing?

I can halfway make gorgeous Barbie gowns. I can halfway make quilts. I have half a green thumb. I love to read better than I love bacon and I actually manage that one pretty well. I can halfway actually cause a hell of a lot of trouble if left to my own devices and know just enough about a few things to probably end up in some very serious trouble. I’m very thankful I write. I’m convinced it’s kept me from doing something like climbing those mountains I always said I would climb when I was younger. I’m so damned clumsy, I’d have fallen to my death. Or caused someone else to fall – that would have been a bad thing.

Q. What is something you do to de-stress?

What do I do to de-stress? I write!

Q. We all know about muses...what do you think inspires you to allow your creative juices flowing?

I actually believe I might have two Muses. And I’m convinced they’re a little upset at being paired with me for a writer, so they do their best to get back at me as often as possible.

They’re harsh taskmaster’s. They have no mercy, no understanding, and very little sympathy for illness, family or appointments. They keep me up all night with visions of erotic delights dancing through my head or bloody murder scenes that leave me cringing. Sometimes all in the same dream. And they does it in full color with written descriptions like captioning - *sigh.* You should feel very sorry for me, because they’re relentless, and quite tireless in how they’re determined to push past even my own limits.

My Muse’s and I have a very unique relationship. Visions of erotic delights (yum yum) paired with the bloody scenes that often have me cringing and refusing to fully describe. I mean, I do my best to fully describe the erotic delights – that can get tiring enough. Right?

Thank you for the wonderful questions, I’ve enjoyed answering them. And if you’d like to learn about the various series and characters my Muses haunt me with, then you can find me at www.loraleigh.com.

Jaime Rush’s MAGIC POSSESSED Interview & giveaway

1. What is one of your favorite Myths/legends to write about?

I’ve never purposely used a myth as a basis of a story. At the core of most of my stories, though, is the battle between good and evil. At least in romance fiction, good always wins!

2. If you could live back in time, what time period would you choose and why?

I’m not sure I’d want to live in any other time. No air conditioning? Computers? Horrible plagues that decimated entire villages? No, thanks! LOL It would be fun to jump back to earlier times for a visit, even back when dinosaurs roamed. Just a quick peek, experience the place, and then back home!
3. Have you ever come across a song that might fit the theme of one of your books? The one that immediately comes to mind is Garth Brooks’s remake of Kiss’s "Hard Luck Woman." It often finds its way onto my heroine’s playlists, because they’ve usually been through a lot of tough stuff by the time the book begins. Of course, I put them through a lot more during the story! But at the end, they have grown above their baggage and found their happily ever after—both with themselves and their heroes.4. Do you remember what you felt when you had your first kiss?I remember feeling like I was so old, fifteen, and never been kissed! Horrors. I do remember that it felt wondrous, though I couldn’t tell you much about the kiss itself. 5. What was the most creative pick up line you've ever used on someone or someone used on you?A guy once said, "Hey, you dropped something. Your smile." It worked, at least to make me smile. It wasn’t a pickup line, per se, or at least I didn’t go hang out with the guy. He was working at one of the stores on Duval Street in Key West. But it was a good reminder to keep a smile on my face. 6. When writing do you have a playlist of music you like to listen to? What are a couple songs on it?I create multiple playlists for each character, depending on the mood of the scene I’m writing. For example, I have poignant, character, suspense and sexy playlists. For Saxby, my current hero in the book I’m writing now (WILD NIGHTS, Nov 2014), a couple of his "character" songs are: "Show Me What I’m Looking For," by Carolina Liar and "Home," by Marc Broussard.7. What do you do when you think nobody is watching?Stare off into the distance (usually I’m either plotting something or going over my gigantic To-Do list).

MAGIC POSSESSED Excerpt

Kade watched Violet Castanega's sassy little ass sashay through the lobby to the entrance. He could tell she wanted to look back at him; she started to but snapped her head straight, pushed the door open, and slammed it shut behind her. Wow, did she look different from the last time he'd seen her.

When he'd arrested Arlo six years ago, someone jumped on his back, wrapping her long legs around his waist and arms over his shoulders. He'd known instantly it was a woman—her breasts crushed against his back had been the first clue. Her shrill voice blasting his ear with, "Let him go!" the second.

He'd reached back to dislodge her and accidentally grabbed her boob. Okay, maybe he'd lingered on that firm and soft and luscious mound of flesh. She'd nailed him in the eye with her elbow. It was only after he'd thrown her off that he realized it was Violet, the once-lanky, scrappy teenager he'd seen during an earlier investigation into Arlo's activities.

Before she could launch another attack, he reminded her that assaulting an officer would result in arrest, and she backed off. She'd been wearing tattered jeans, a muddy tank top and boots, and smelled of earth. A red scarf covered her dark brown hair, but her braid had hung down her back and tendrils of hair had escaped. To his surprise, her untamed self had tugged at the rebellious, wild side he'd had to stuff deep inside. And it still did apparently.

The spark between them was bizarre. Never would he nail a Fringer, doubly so, since they were all Dragons. Not even one with silky hair falling over her shoulders and a long, lean body. He returned to the pit, where several pairs of eyes were on him.

"Did you spank her for giving you that shiner, Kavanaugh?" Treach called out, followed by a chorus of guffaws.

"I think you were a little too distracted and let her get the best of you," Baker said. "You wanted to spank her."

Kade shook his head, learning long ago that to respond was the weaker action. He headed to his office, a tantalizing image of Violet sprawled across his lap while he spanked that lush behind flashing into his mind. That was not helping his hard-on.

His sister, Mia, sidled up next to him. "What was that about?"

"The shiner?" He waved it off. "She was fast, nailed me while I was dealing with her brothers." He wasn't getting into the boob part.

"No wonder you never mentioned who'd given you that black eye. These chauvinistic bastards will never let you live that down." She shot them a derisive glance and lowered her voice. "But that's not what I was talking about. There was an erotic vibe in the way you dealt with her, and ooh, the way the mist in your eyes is swirling now."

He kept all expression from his face, including annoyance at her observation. "I was making sure she didn't cause a scene. Nothing more."

She gave him a skeptical look, which he deserved because he knew exactly what she was talking about. He didn't have an answer for it either, because no way was he attracted to a Castanega. Even a sexy, sassy one. "Take note, little sister. With people like her, you've got to establish dominance immediately. The moment they think they've got the upper hand, they do."

The usual light of admiration returned to her eyes, the way it did whenever he imparted his wisdom to her. "I see that. You didn't let her get away with anything, while she completely got away from me. That's why you're one of the best Vegas in the department."

He loved her admiration, and he didn't. He knew too well how betrayed one felt when the object of your admiration fell and shattered to pieces. She was too young to remember when all the years of their father's sterling service to the Guard exploded in scandal. A woman had made wild accusations about a member of the Concilium, the government entity that oversaw the Hidden and instituted the rules. Somehow their father had gotten involved, emotionally, maybe romantically. Stewart Kavanaugh had helped the woman escape, and both were killed.

Everyone had kept the ugly details from Mia, then age seven. As far as she knew, a crazy woman escaped and attacked their father. Weeks later, their mother had taken her life, unable to deal with the betrayal and scandal. She was a selfish, weak woman who cared more about her reputation than her young daughter.

On top of that, Kade had been demoted to Argus. Some people complained that he'd been fast-tracked to Vega because of his father's influence and that he didn't deserve his position because his reckless behavior made the Guard look bad. Maybe that was true, but they conveniently forgot the thirty years that he was a Vega who closed almost every case. Five years of towing the line, exemplary work, and living by the rules had earned him Vega again. Humiliating, belittling years that changed him from cavalier and edgy to a sterling, model officer.

"Kavanaugh," Ferro called out, leaning out of his office. He saw Mia and added, "Kade." Ferro remained standing once Kade closed the door behind him, looking at the map with the tacks on it. "Take the Castanega woman out."

The words hit Kade like a cold slap, so out of the blue he had to clarify in case he'd misheard. "'Take her out'? You mean kill her?"

"I thought you were beyond needing the terms explained."

Kade bristled. "For barging into your office?"

The corner of Ferro's mouth twitched. "You're questioning the order?"

"It seems extreme, sir."

"It has nothing to do with her conduct here." Ferro lifted the paper she'd brought in. "We've been watching her for a while now. These killings are connected to her, and her act about being concerned is just that." He let the paper drift down to his desk. "Worthless pieces of trash, all of them. A blight on Crescent society."

Those words prickled across Kade's skin. He'd heard them spoken about his father after the debacle.

Ferro continued. "Their skirmishes act as population control, but in the age of the Internet and instant news, they threaten to expose what we are. Eliminating her will serve as a warning to anyone else involved."

The Guard didn't have people killed for less than a good reason. Kade wasn't always privy to the reasons, and frankly, he'd never been concerned about it. Orders were orders. Still, the prospect of whacking Violet sank his stomach. Because he'd felt her body against his? And felt arousal?

Think with your right head, Kavanaugh.

Vegas were akin to Special Ops, called in when the mission was dangerous, tricky, or required a special skill. He had to trust his superior. He would carry out his task as ordered.

"I'll take care of it, sir."

Tes Hilarie Interview

Interview Questions

What is one of your favorite Myths/legends to write about?

Tes: Besides my love of the Paladin warriors? Well… I also have a thing for some of the Greek mythology. In fact, I have a young adult novel, Fifteen Forever, that takes a twist on the Pandora legend in a modern day setting.

If you could live back in time, what time period would you choose and why?

Tes: I have to admit, if I visit the historical shelves, my hands always gravitate towards those hunky highland, tartan-clad warriors. But would I want to live in that time? Uh, no… I love my indoor plumbing too much. And heat, I definitely like a consistent, somewhere well above freezing, heating arrangement. Now traveling forward in time? That’s something I might be very interested in doing :-)

Have you ever come across a song that might fit the theme of one of your books?

Tes: Hmmm… I think I more have character songs. Iris by Goo Goo Dolls, Uninvited by Alanis Morrisette, Demons by Imagine Dragons, Hurt by Johnny Cash… I’ll let you try and guess who belongs to each song :-)

Do you remember what you felt when you had your first kiss?

Tes: I remember feeling clumsy and excited. I think clumsy won though! LOL!

What was the most creative pick up line you've ever used on someone or someone used on you?

Tes: "Did you happen to lose some earrings?" Okay… it doesn’t sound all that awesome, but it worked for my husband! We had been working together on a college project and he happened to find some earrings, which turned into a great excuse for him to talk to me later outside of the school setting…and well, the rest is history ;-)

When writing do you have a playlist of music you like to listen to? What are a couple songs on it?

Tes: I have a whole list of songs that I listen to while writing the Paladin novels. Lots of Coldplay, Imagine Dragons, some One Republic, Mumford & Sons, and then throw in some heavy stuff like Nine Inch Nails for good measure.

What do you do when you think nobody is watching?

Tes: READ! It’s my guilty pleasure. Not that reading isn’t wonderful, but with the amount I read, my husband thinks I am an addict. ;-)

What was your favorite childhood book?

Tes: Naming a favorite is hard so I’ll name the one that first touched the little bit of me that wanted to be a writer: The Secret Garden.

What is your favorite addition to chocolate?

Tes: Chocolate and toasted hazelnut coffee.

What does your husband/significant other say about your writing erotic stories? What about your family and/or do they read your books?

Tes: My hubby thinks it’s great. He’s always offering to help with the research *rolls eyes.* My kids just know mom writes "books for adults." My mother, on the other hand… well she loves my stories, just wishes there was more closed door scenes…like all of them!

Besides your own, what is one of your favorite series to keep up with?

Tes: My go-to series tend to be urban fantasy ones: Mercy Thompson, Kate Daniels, MacKayla Lane…to name a few.

What do you think you would be doing if you weren't writing?

Tes: At this stage in my life, with the kids the ages they are, I would probably be even crazier into things like PTO and volunteering at the school. I might also cook more "from scratch" meals and do more homey crafts. Laundry though, can wait!

Do you have any hobbies or activities you enjoy doing?

Tes: I love to hike, kayak, quilt, cook, scrapbook…to name a few. I try and make time for the healthier hobbies simply because I feel they are important, but the crafty hobbies take up too much time that I don’t have.

What is something you do to de-stress?

Tes: I recently began taking taekwondo with my kids. I was spending so much time sitting watching them that I decided I could make better use of the time by joining them! It’s been a great stress reliever and is definitely good for me.

We all know about muses...what do you think inspires you to allow your creative juices flowing?

Tes: For me, I think it’s an empty house and my writing playlist. If people are around, I find it very difficult to get into the groove. Even if no one is currently demanding my time, I just know that the demand is coming. That said, I can’t really create in a quiet house. There are too many real world distractions…the dishes on the counter, the clothes in the dryer, the thin (okay… thin for me) layer of dust on my shelf. I find that a good playlist is the cureall for these real world woes, helping me to block out the things I should be doing to escape with my muse into my creative world. :-)

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Daphne Award-winning author and former Tennessee native Tes Hilaire doesn’t remember how old she was when she wrote her first story, but she’s pretty sure it had something to do with a boy and a girl and a happily ever after. Displaced at an early age to "the north country," her stories turned darker as she started creating whole new worlds to escape the harsh, upstate NY winters. Now back in the South, her stories remain edgy, exciting, and bring a hint of dark fantasy to paranormal romance. Best of all, no one ever has to shovel snow. ~ DELETED SCENE ~

Sometimes authors see a scene or a character before they know much about the book that’s poking at them to be written. Ruby Salazaar, from DRAGON AWAKENED, came to me in full color … but she changed during the process of story planning. I thought it would be fun to share my original version of her, along with a peek at who she ended up being, with my friends here at Bitten by Reviews.

OLD OPENING:
Ruby felt the hand grab her ass as she walked past the table covered in empty beer and shot glasses. John Jr. was obviously trying to impress his friends. She stopped in her tracks and took a deep breath before turning to lance him with the look of death.
"I'm sorry, sweet Ruby, I jus' can't help myself when that tight, round ass of yours goes saunterin' by."
She didn’t recognize the two other men at the table. She ran Jake's Bar and only waited tables when necessary. "I guess you forgot about that broken finger you got last time you grabbed my sweet ass." She gave him a forced smile that bled maliciousness and crooked her finger. "Shall I remind you?"
He yanked his hand back. Then he looked at his friends and tried to laugh it off. "She's kidding. Such a kidder. Woman's got a body to taunt and a mouth to torment a man."
"She don't look like she's kidding," the beefy one with his shoe propped on the edge of the scarred table said. At the very moment she thought he looked familiar, his eyes narrowed. "Wait a minute. Ruby? Ruby Salazaar?"
It clicked. "Tommy Canton."
"I'll be darned. I went to middle school with this here girl." He pushed to his feet and approached her like he was going to give her a hug.
She put her hands up to ward him off. "You are not to going to hug me like we're long lost friends. Unless you count cutting off my braid, gluing my books together, and leaving me with more bruises than Mary Lou Petroski had hickeys as friendship."
He chuckled. "You still got that braid, too. Always thought it was the color of honey." When she glared at the hand that was reaching out to touch that braid, he dropped his hands to his side. "Aw, come on. That was a long time ago."
"Sixteen years isn't long enough to forget the torment."
He slumped back into his seat. "I only did it 'cause your uncle paid me to."
She was sure her eyebrows jumped to her hair line. "What?"
"You didn't know? He got Jimmy and Bosley to do it, too. Five bucks a week, something about making you stronger for it. Five bucks was a lot of money to a twelve year old. Truth was, I thought you were a spitfire, a cute one at that. Guess I went a little too far, huh?"
She walked away, stunned and yet, suspicious. Still, why would he make up something like that? It sounded like something her uncle might pull, eccentric that he was. But why?
Jake was wiping glasses behind the bar. The reformed alcoholic who owned a bar. His paunch wasn't from beer, that was for sure. "They giving you a hard time?" he asked, not looking particularly concerned. He knew she could handle herself. That's why he paid her so much to stick around when all the other bar babes hit the road after a few months. Once he'd even admitted that the guys came here because she hit back, either with fists or with her smart mouth. She was fricking entertainment. She earned every penny of her overblown salary.
He set down one glass hard on the counter, his watery gaze on her. "Uh oh. You got that look again, the one that costs me money."
The look that said she'd had it. Every time, he bribed her with a salary raise, and she hated to admit she sold out. Problem was, she had no idea what she wanted to do with her life. Teaching women self-defense at the gym was the only thing that sparked her soul, but she didn't think it would pay money enough to sustain her hotdogs and canned chili lifestyle. Besides, she liked doing it for free.
The phone rang, and Jake snatched it up in his fat hand. "Jake's Bar … Sure, she's right here." He thrust it at her and mouthed, It's your uncle.
"Were your ears ringing?" she asked to the mouthpiece, skipping right past hello.
"Ruby, I've got trouble."
"Did you piss off one of your new neighbors already? I told you not to hang the magic artifacts all over the yard. Creeps them out."
"It's more than that." He sounded breathless, and the tone in his voice stiffened her body.
"What?"
"She's found us, and there are things I have to tell you."
"She? Who's she?"
"I need you to come to the house now."
Her throat tightened. "Okay. I'll be there in about forty minutes."
His last words were, "Speed."

I wasn’t particularly sold on Ruby being a bar manager, and while I wanted her to be tough, I thought she was a bit too rough in this version. I mean, really, breaking a man’s fingers? Interestingly, I have no idea who the ‘she’ is that her uncle is referring to either.

This is how the opening ended up:

Ah, the smell of fresh paint in the morning.
Ruby stepped out of the office and squinted at the sun reflecting off the windshield of a ’57 Chevy. For a few seconds, a bright mark marred everything she saw, including the Gottlieb Grand Slam 1953 pinball machine that was farther along in the restoration process. Beyond that, five acres filled with memories of climbing cars, dismantling bicycles, and the sound of her mom calling, “Ruby, get off there. You’re going to fall and crack your head open!” To an adventurous seven-year-old: annoying. Now, a sound she’d kill to hear again.
What she didn’t see was her business partner. Typical. She stalked across the gravel, searching the sections of vintage toys, old signage, and then Coca-Cola machines for him.
“Seen Nevin?” she asked Jack, her expert on motorcycle restoration.
He nodded toward the back. “Chewing the fat with a friend.”
“Augh.”
Jack hefted his wrench. “Want me to bust his chops, Miz Ruby? I’ll kick his ass all over the place…if you’ll pardon my French.”
“That’s not French,” she said, trying to ignore the “Miz Ruby” that he wouldn’t stop calling her, along with his flirtatious smile. “Thanks, but he’s my problem.”
She continued on to Nevin’s disorganized side of the yard and found him leaning against one of his junk sculptures, laughing it up with some guy.
“Nevin.” She kept her gaze on him, plastering on a pleasant-but-fake smile for his friend’s benefit. “Our client is picking up the Wayne gas pump at the end of the week, the one that doesn’t look anywhere near ready.”
Nevin rubbed his belly where his shirt rode up and exposed pale, flabby flesh. “You’re good at finding deals and making old stuff look new again.” He gestured to the roof of a 1976 Cadillac Fleetwood he’d fashioned into a table. “How ’bout you do the resto stuff and let me focus on my art?”
“Resto is paying the bills. You haven’t sold one piece yet.”
“Aw, Ruby, you said business is good. Can’t we take it easy for a bit?”
No, she needed to push herself, to fill some need for…something. Her pseudo-uncle Moncrief inherited the Yard, along with her, when her parents were killed in a boating accident fifteen years ago. Because he traveled often performing his magic shows, he couldn’t deal with running the Yard. Ruby had sobbed at the prospect of losing the last tangible tie to her mom, so he made a deal with Nevin’s parents: a half share for managing it.
After graduating high school, she wrested control from Nevin’s father, who proved that being a lovable lackey was in his gene pool. When he passed, Nevin’s mom insisted he step in, hoping to give him direction. He’d been one of the early strays Ruby attracted. While she had the kind of affection one might have for a dumb-but-sweet cousin, she wasn’t going to let him run the business into the ground like his father nearly did.
The man with Nevin said, “Ruby Salazaar, don’t you recognize me?” The wiry guy in a white cotton T and faded jeans gave her an expectant smile. Smoke trailed from the cigarette clamped between his fingers.
“Leo Canton?”
He looked nothing like the afro-haired kid whose parents were part of Mon’s touring troupe. His hair was trimmed short now, round glasses gone. “Been a long time.” He approached her with outstretched arms.
She warded him off. “You are not going to hug me like we’re long-lost friends. Unless you count cutting off my braid and terrorizing me as friendship, which I do not.”
He chuckled, dropping the cigarette and grinding it into the gravel with his heel. “You still got a braid.” His gaze followed it all the way down to her rear. “The color of honey. You nailed me good after I cut it off. I had that black eye for weeks.”
“You deserved every hour of it.” She’d pounded him, the rage so overwhelming it scared her. She pointed to the cigarette. “Didn’t you see the sign? Anyone who drops his butts has to pick them up and put a dollar into the ‘Jar of Bad Behavior.’ Which I use for the cat neuter fund.” She nodded toward two kittens who were racing over to rub against Leo’s ankles.
Leo pulled out his wallet and handed her a fiver. “Still feisty as ever, and a hell of a lot stronger.” He had the gall to clamp his hand over her biceps but pulled away at the murderous glare she gave him.
Nevin made a tsking sound. “She hates to be touched, dude. Some guy grabbed her buttocks once, and she dropped him right to the ground. Dude clutched his cojones all the way outta here, yowling like a girl.” His pride warmed her heart.
“That doesn’t surprise me.” Leo slumped back against the car and crossed his arms over his chest. “You did get the best training on attack and evade, thanks to me.”
“You mean the Hunter/Prey game you and Jimmy used to force me into playing?” The two would start hunting her, prowling the tour buses or the stage equipment. She was always the reluctant prey. Except something inside her actually liked it while the rest of her hated it.
He shrugged. “We only did it ’cause your uncle paid us to.”
What?”
Leo plucked a kitten from midway up his pant leg and set it down. “Five bucks a week. Skills building, he called it.”
“You’re serious?”
“Your uncle did things to protect you. He was super paranoid for some reason.” He peered into her eyes. “You still don’t…” He clamped his mouth shut and waved as he sauntered off. “Nevin, gimme a shout if you find the part for my truck.”
“I still don’t what?” she called after him.
“Have a sense of humor,” Leo said, though she knew that wasn’t what he was going to say.
She pinned Nevin with a glare. “Is this true, about Mon paying kids to torment me?”
He assumed the blank look of the guilty.
Her cell phone rang. “Speak of the devil.” She skipped right past hello. “Were your ears ringing? I’ve got—”
“Ruby, there’s trouble.”
“Did you piss off your new neighbors already? I told you not to hang those weird artifacts all over your front porch. Creeps people out.”
“No, big trouble, ducky. Get over here, quick. There are things I have to tell you, things I should have told you long ago.”
Her throat tightened at the agony in his voice. “Be there in about forty minutes.”
“Speed.”

Watching American Restoration inspired Ruby’s new career. I wanted her to be doing something that meant a lot to her rather than having a job she detested. The resto yard plays in a few scenes, and I liked all the props I could use, especially when a big monster comes to play.
