I’ve always loved stories. Especially love stories. Growing up in the Midwest, I’d make up stories to my favorite TV shows – usually westerns.
As I got older, the stories didn’t relent. In fact, they only got stronger, the characters more insistent, until I had no choice but to put it all on paper. It’s become an obsession for me. One that I love.
When not sitting at my computer, I spend my time working as a substitute teacher and fitness instructor.
Guess you could say I’m an equal opportunity “persuader” of the young and, ahem, not so young.

I’m going to have a baby,” Ivy declares as she stops directly in front of me. Well, her belly stopped directly in front of me, the rest of her soon follows.
Yes, indeed, my wife is definitely going to have a baby. Soon.
I’m getting ready—staring at the mirror as I mess with my tie, making sure it’s perfect—when she approaches me. I shoot her a grin, feeling good, feeling on top of my game. Life couldn’t get any better, you know? We’re celebrating today and with good reason.
“I know, sexy mama.” I turn away from the mirror and wink at her. “Trust me, I haven’t forgotten that I’m the one who knocked you up.”
She stares at me, no reaction to my wink or my words. She usually slaps my ass and kisses me. Says something sarcastic at the very least. But I’m getting nothing. And it’s kind of disconcerting. “Archer. I’m dead serious. I’m going to have the baby.”
“I know, babe. And I can’t freaking wait.” I study her, noticing that she looks a little pale and her pupils are dilated. Hmm. “You feeling okay?”
Rolling her eyes, she rests her hand on top of her protruding stomach, rubbing it absently. Then not so absently. As in, she’s clutching her belly like she’s in pain. “I’m in—” She sucks in a harsh breath, holding it for a few seconds. “—labor, damn it.”

EXCERPT
Zephyr wished like hell Alesia wasn’t the most beautiful woman he’d ever known, inside and out. For him, she was perfection with layered brown hair, neither dark nor light, just a soft shade between. She had large, green eyes, thick lashes. Her human genetics had softened her fae appearance so that her chin wasn’t as pointed as most of the fae he knew. The result somehow charmed him as no other woman ever had.
Her ears had rounded fae points that he’d enjoyed tonguing and she’d loved how he’d worked her ears. He’d never been with a woman who liked her ears sucked and tongued the way Alesia had.
She stood five-ten, a perfect armful. She wasn’t a skinny type either, but had a rounded ass he couldn’t get enough of and full breasts. At the same time, he could fit his hands around her small waist.
Damn all the elf lords, he missed the woman, ached for her, but she’d broken it off after their last big fight in which they’d called each other a few choice names, some of which fit. She could be opinionated as hell and he definitely, on occasion, fit the epithet of a stubborn, intractable male.
Still, nothing he’d said, no amount of apologies could eradicate the sore point between them that he killed wraith-pairs on the spot. She believed, with every ounce of her lovely self, that wraith-pairs should be captured, not killed, and afterward rehabilitated.
The first time he’d heard her opinion, he’d laughed, thinking she’d been joking. But she hadn’t. Instead, she’d been so offended that she’d thrown a small but heavy ceramic dish at his head. Her apologies about the bump on his forehead had been long and regretful since she’d felt like such a hypocrite having used violence against him.
He’d healed within a minute, the wound completely disappearing, then set aside the argument by kissing her, working those sexy ears of hers, then making love to her.
Sweet Goddess, how he missed sexing her up, watching her body move beneath his, her moans and the final cries of ecstasy. She always sounded like a hunting bird in flight when she came, and he’d loved it.
Now he served essentially as her bodyguard, escorting her home last thing before dawn, night after night. He had to know she was safe. He couldn’t sleep otherwise. She didn’t like that he looked after her in this way and was perpetually mad at him. But as long as she didn’t look to her own safety, in a part of Merhaine where wraith-pairs hunted more heavily than any other part of the realm, he’d fly her the hell home at dawn.

Is he strong enough to take the final leap out of his broken past . . . and into Nova's heart?
Excerpt:
December 28, the day of the funeral
It’s a strange feeling, getting ready to watch someone get put under the ground into their final resting place. I’ve been to enough funerals to know that my senses always become hyper-aware of everything going on around me: the touch of the wind seems stronger, the sun a little more blinding, the smell of the leaves, grass, and fresh dirt overpowering. It’s like my mind is reaching out and trying to grasp each aspect of the moment, when part of me wants nothing more than to forget.
I’m actually at the church earlier than I’m supposed to be and I don’t even know why, other than that sitting home for a second longer just didn’t seem possible. So I left the house without telling anyone and got in my cherry-red Chevy Nova, the car my dad left to me when he died, and drove it to the church where my dad’s and Landon’s funeral took place. And in just a bit, I’ll say good-bye to another person I once knew and will never see again.
Now that I’m here, staring at the brick building with a white tower pointing to the sky, I’m not sure what I should do. I’m three hours early to a funeral, which might say a lot about me. A lot of people would likely show up late, wanting to avoid death for as long as possible, but I’ve become so familiar with it it’s unsettling.
After sitting in the car for about ten minutes, watching snowflakes fall from the sky and frost the grass and the windshield, I decide to take video instead. I didn’t bring the fancy camera my mom gave me, but the one on my phone works and honestly I use that one a lot more because it’s handy for sporadic recording, which seems to be my specialty.
I blow out a deep breath as I sit back in the seat, aim the camera at myself, and hit record. I have the screen flipped to me and my image immediately pops up. I look tired. The bags under my eyes are pretty obvious, even though I’ve tried to cover them up with makeup, and my brown hair wasn’t being cooperative so I ended up pulling it up into a ponytail. I’m wearing a black dress and earrings and the contrast with my fair skin makes me look pallid.
“It’s amazing how everything can seem so perfect one moment and then suddenly it’s not. How quickly perfection can evaporate… how rare it is.” I pause, gathering my thoughts. “I’ve seen a lot of death. More than the normal person, probably. I watched my father’s life vanish in front of me within minutes. Found my boyfriend’s body right after he took his own life. Too early. Too suddenly. Both of them. I never had time to prepare myself and I thought it was the worst feeling in the world. I always wondered how different it would be, if it ever happened again. If maybe the third or fourth time around, I wouldn’t hurt so badly. If it’d be easier letting someone go now that I’ve had so much practice.” I tuck a fallen strand of my bangs behind my ear and swallow the lump in my throat. “And maybe it has gotten easier… but it still hurts. I still shed tears… it’s still agonizing… painful…” I trail off as a few tears slip from my eyes and roll down my cheeks. “Even now, just thinking about some of the stuff I saw… I should have stopped it… should have done things differently…” I trail off, staring at the window. “But I didn’t… and now they’re gone forever.”

Review Tour for FOREVER (Time for Love #1) by Miranda P. Charles
Rebecca Andrews knew she was lucky to be hired as a private nurse for an elderly lady who was going on a one-month trip aboard a luxury cruise ship. But there was one big problem. The client was the grandmother of her ex-boyfriend--the guy she was still in love with; the guy who didn't love her back.
Zach Carmichael couldn't say no to his grandmother's plea to join her on a month-long cruise for her eightieth birthday. But he didn't expect his spritely gran to bring two private nurses with her. One of them happened to be the woman who broke his heart--the one he believed lied to him about her feelings.
Aboard a luxury liner, their passion for each other flared again. Was it just a temporary flame brought about by the romance of being in a cruise? How could they give love another chance when they were both afraid to put their hearts back on the line?

Author Info
Ever since I was a young teenager, I have loved reading romance novels. My auntie used to send me boxes of her books and I would devour them one after another.
Every so often, I would read a mystery or a suspense or a paranormal novel as I love those genres too. But romance is still my favourite. :)
For many years, I wrote technical and non-fiction materials for professional use and had only dreamt about writing a novel. Then, one day, after a period of binge-reading sexy romances, I decided to sit in front of my computer and start writing my first fiction book. The result? My debut novel Will To Love, the first in the hot and sexy Lifestyle by Design series. After that, I knew that I would love to tell more beautiful love stories through my books.
I live in Sydney, Australia with my amazing husband who lovingly cheers me on in my journey as a novelist.

How to Handle a Cowboy by Joanne Kennedy Interview
What is one of your favorite Myths/legands to write about?
I ‘m dedicated to perpetuating the myth of the American cowboy! In my books, the cowboys are all good-looking and none of them chew tobacco. That’s not always the case in real life, but hey, that’s why I write fiction – so I can create a world that’s a little better than the real thing.
If you could live back in time, what time period would you choose and why?
I would love to try living in the old West between about 1850 and 1890. I probably wouldn’t last a week, but I love going to ghost towns and finding old abandoned homesteader’s cabins on the prairie and imagining what life was like back then. One of these days I’ll write an historical Western.
Have you ever come across a song that might fit the theme of one of your books?
Any country song about pickup trucks and dirt roads works for me!
Do you remember what you felt when you had your first kiss?
I certainly do! My first boyfriend had a very aristocratic name. I won’t tell it here for privacy reasons, but it was something akin to Chester P. Arlington the Third, and he was quite well off. My husband teases me about my expensive taste in boyfriends all the time, but “Chester” was a sweet kid – and a very good kisser:)
What was the most creative pick up line you've ever used on someone or someone used on you?
It’s not exactly a line, but my now-husband was a customer at the bookstore where I worked and bought and read all the Oprah book picks, from Wally Lamb’s I Know This Much is True to Icy Sparks. I though he was such a sweet, sensitive guy. It turns out he really is – but he doesn’t really read that much:)
When writing do you have a playlist of music you like to listen to? What are a couple songs on it?
I don’t listen to music when I write. I can’t concentrate with music playing, especially if it has lyrics. My poor husband, the Oprah Book Club expert, has to watch TV with headphones on when I’m writing, which is most of the time. Maybe he should start reading again!
What do you do when you think nobody is watching?
I let my dogs off the leash!
What was your favorite childhood book?
I loved The Secret Garden, by Frances Hodgson Burnett. It’s about the healing power of nature, which is something I’ve believed in ever since. In fact, it’s still working for me today. I’m a cancer survivor and just moved to a beautiful piece of land down by the Colorado border, with 13 acres of rocks and trees and a little creek burbling through it. In a way, that decision was influenced by reading and rereading that book all those years ago.
What is your favorite addition to chocolate?
Oh, my gosh, do I love dark chocolate Kit Kats. A lot of stores don’t carry them, so when my husband and I find them we buy them ALL. We get some strange looks from store clerks, but it’s so worth it.
What does your husband/significant other say about your writing erotic stories? What about your family and/or do they read your books?
My husband is proud of my writing, but he doesn’t read it, which is fine by me. How do I put this delicately? Um, he might recognize some of the scenes and incidents in my stories, and that would be weird for him.
My parents both read my books. When my first book was published, I figured my dad would skip over he sex scenes. Nope. Talk about awkward…
Besides your own, what is one of your favorite series to keep up with?
I love Linda Lael Miller’s McKettrick cowboys and Jodi Thomas’ Harmony books.
What do you think you would be doing if you weren't writing?
I worked in bookselling for most of my life, so I’d probably still be doing that. I wouldn’t be nearly as happy, though. And I’d still be writing, even if nobody paid me to do it. I can’t imagine not having that outlet.
Do you have any hobbies or activities you enjoy doing?
I don’t have much time for hobbies since I try to put out two books a year and I’m a slow writer. But I do love my dogs. I have two Jack Russell terriers and a great big beautiful mastiff mix. They’re great companions and wonderful friends.
What is something you do to de-stress?
I go for long walks with my dogs. Either we tramp the dirt roads or we hike in the woods. Both give me time to think and breathe and just be, and my dogs get to be dogs, sniffing for varmints and chasing sticks.
We all know about muses...what do you think inspires you to allow your creative juices flowing?
I’ve always loved to write, but a close call with cancer a couple years ago made it even more important to me. I’m fine now, but it’s more important to me than ever to leave a little piece of myself behind in my books. Is that morbid? I hope not!
10 Fun Facts (things the fans don't know)
My husband and I just bought a 1990 Jeep Cherokee from our son. It has a lift kit on it and massive speakers. Now we load up the dogs and drive like teenagers!
I’ve seen Bruce Springsteen in concert ten times, and need another fix.
I have absolutely no sense of direction.
I just adopted a 100-pound mastiff...puppy. He’s still growing...and growing...and growing.
There are claw marks from a bear on my deck. But that’s okay (see #4).
I used to own a used and rare bookstore.
I’m an avid birdwatcher.
I love old bones, and have an antelope skull in my den.
I’m a scavenger, not a hunter (see #8).
I live at the end of a dirt road and have no cell service.
His Rodeo Days May Be Over...
Sidelined by a career-ending injury, rodeo cowboy Ridge Cooper feels trapped at his family's remote Wyoming ranch. Desperate to find an outlet for the passion he used to put into competing, he takes on the challenge of teaching his roping skills to five troubled ten-year-olds in a last-chance home for foster kids, and finds it's their feisty supervisor who takes the most energy to wrangle.
But He'll Still Wrangle Her Heart…
When social worker Sierra Dunn seeks an activity for the rebellious kids at Phoenix House, she soon learns she's not in Denver anymore. Sierra is eager to get back home to her inner-city work, and the plan doesn't include forming an attachment in Wyoming—especially not to a ruggedly handsome and surprisingly gentle local rodeo hero.

Carolyn Brown Recipe tour
Easter is right around the corner both in real life and in The Red-Hot Chili Cook-Off. And Sugar Magee has finally bested Violet Prescott by getting to move the Easter egg hunt from Violet’s place to Sugar’s. It’s a big step in dethroning Violet and Agnes, Violet’s arch enemy is delighted with the move. Dinner has been served and now it’s almost time for the Easter egg hunt. Easter always means ham and candied sweet potatoes, baked beans, hot rolls and the whole ten yards (nine just isn’t enough for our family) so I thought I’d share our recipe for sweet potato casserole with you today. But first let’s peek in on the Easter egg hunt at Sugar and Jamie Magee’s place…
Excerpt:
Patrice propped her feet on a chaise lounge on the patio where dinner had been served buffet style with all the southern traditional foods, starting with baked ham and candied yams. Tulip centerpieces blooming in pastel-colored pots were on the center of the tables covered with pink, yellow, and blue plaid cloths. It was all very much in tune with the Easter holiday and now the guys, including Yancy, had all followed Uncle
Jamie out to the horse stables to look at a new colt born just that morning.
“Got to admit when that motorcycle pulled up in my driveway last night, I figured it was Alma Grace. I ran to the window and peeked out but be damned if it wasn’t Carlene. Y’all want to know what happened?” Agnes asked.
Gigi set her bottle of beer on the table. “I’m listening.”
“Mama!” Carlene exclaimed.
Beulah blushed.
Agnes patted her hand. “Don’t go havin’ a heart attack. They didn’t make grandbabies even though after the way Violet tried to un-man him, it might have been a good idea.”
“Jack walked her to the door. I had to hustle to get to the living room window to see what happened next,” Patrice said.
“And?” Tansy asked.
“He slowly brought her hand to his lips, kissed her fingertips, and left. It was the most romantic thing ever.” Patrice sighed.
Beulah changed the subject. “Is Violet invited out here today?”
“The whole town is invited,” Sugar said. “It’s a glorious Easter and we will put away our differences so the little ones can all hunt their eggs.”
“Speak for yourself,” Agnes said.
“Can I grow up and be just like you?” Patrice asked.
“You sure can, honey.”
“Agnes Flynn, I’m mad at you,” Beulah said.
“What the hell for?” Agnes asked. “I got you the right to hit Violet. Why should you be mad at me?”
“It’s not fair that you get a grandbaby and I don’t,” Beulah said.
“It’s not really my grandbaby since Cathy is my niece not my daughter. And if you’d gotten started when you were twenty instead of waiting until you were almost forty to have Jack, you might have a dozen by now,” Agnes told her.
Beulah worried about everything and everyone so Patrice was surprised when she drew her eyes down at Agnes.
“I wish I had and I wish I’d had five or six kids instead of one. You girls pay attention to me. You’re all looking thirty in the eye. Believe me, it’ll be here before you know it. It’s time for you to settle down and have babies. You’ll regret it when you are my age and don’t even have grandchildren,” Beulah said.
“You listenin’ to her?” Yancy bent over and kissed Patrice upside down.
“Yes, I am. Are you?” she answered.
Yancy kissed her again. “The guys have arrived and they’re getting ready to hide eggs. You sweet ladies just sit right here and we’ll do this job. Jamie says to tell Sugar that the caterers have the refreshment tables all ready. Y’all look like a picture from a southern magazine all sitting around drinkin’ lemonade.”
Gigi held up her beer bottle. “Darlin’, this is not lemonade.”
“And it’s not five o’clock but my lemonade has a little kick to it. If you’d like some, it’s in the green pitcher,” Tansy said.
I promised the sweet potato casserole recipe but I’m wondering if any of y’all have a special Easter recipe you’d like to share with us.

The Day He Kissed Her by Juliana Stone Interview
1. If you could live back in time, what time period would you choose and why?
I would love to visit the 50’s or early 60’s. The 50’s because it was such a peaceful, prosperous time and just simple. We live too fast today and it would be amazing to get some of that back. I would love to visit the 60’s and track down Jim Morrison and Janis Joplin before they died. Love their music and the legacy.
2. Do you remember what you felt when you had your first kiss?
My first kiss was gross. I remember it was spring, the snow was melting. I was at the arena and kissed a boy outside. There were big lips and lots of spit and I don’t think I kissed a boy for years after that, LOL.
3. When writing do you have a playlist of music you like to listen to? What are a couple songs on it?
Sometimes I like to listen to music to get me in the right mood for a certain scene and that’s usually because I need a bit of an emotional kick. I love songs like Travelin’ Soldier by the Dixie Chicks ( I cry every time) if I need that sort of thing.
4. What do you do when you think nobody is watching?
Try to take a decent selfie but it never works.
5. What was your favorite childhood book?
A tie between The Velveteen Rabbit and The Secret Garden.
6. What is your favorite addition to chocolate?
Peanut butter of course!
7. What do you think you would be doing if you weren't writing?
If I wasn’t writing, I’d be doing something artistic. Singing maybe, in some smoky hole in the wall!
8. Do you have any hobbies or activities you enjoy doing?
I’m a total baseball geek and love playing in our local ladies league. I also love to golf and hockey is a huge deal in our town!
9. What is something you do to de-stress?
I walk or try to walk the dog every day. And when I finish a book, I go and have a massage. It’s like the sweetest reward ever!
10. We all know about muses...what do you think inspires you to allow your creative juices flowing?
I find inspiration in every day things like family and friends. Also, a writer (I believe) is wired differently. WE have to write or the voices in our heads would drive us crazy!
10 Fun Facts
-I used to front an all female rock band in the 80’s
-I met my husband when his band’s truck broke down and they came to a bar I was playing at. That was 26 years ago. OY.
-I hate peas.
-I talk to myself constantly. No I’m not crazy, just vocalizing dialogue LOL

EXCERPT:
Ignoring her hot cheeks, she turned quickly, her only thought to get as far away from Mac Draper as she could. She had a plan. She’d hide out at the cottage until he left town. From what little she knew about him, he wasn’t close to his family and he had some fancy job in New York City. He was most likely only home for the holiday anyway.
Okay. This was good. This would work.
“Lily, are you alright?”
Her head snapped up and she attempted a smile as Marnie Edwards walked toward her, a cocktail in her hand, a gentle smile on her face. As always, her heart warmed when she saw the woman. It was then that she realized why she’d come. As much as she didn’t do family, there was something about the Edwardses that made her feel wanted.
They were good people. Everything her family was not.
“I’m fine,” Lily said quickly. “I just…I feel kind of sick to my stomach.” She rubbed her belly for good measure.
“Oh my,” Marnie said with concern. “I hope it wasn’t the shrimp.”
“The what?”
Damn. She heard Cain’s voice, and it sounded a hell of a lot closer than it did a minute before. They were heading this way. She tried to sidestep Marnie, but the woman looked really worried and wouldn’t budge.
“The shrimp cocktail? Did you have any of it?”
The shrimp.
“Oh.” Lily cleared her throat. “I might have had one, but I’m sure that’s not it. I wasn’t feeling one hundred percent this morning, and I probably should have stayed home. I think I’m coming down with something.”
She coughed for good measure, but only managed to draw looks from Jake and Raine—and from Steven as he walked outside from in the house.
“Christ, Lily. You sound like a damn cat with a hairball,” Jake said.
“I think I’m going to have to leave,” Lily stated, ignoring Jake. She couldn’t look at him because he knew her well enough to know she was bullshitting. He’d know something was up.
Lily inched forward and then froze when she heard that voice. That deep, husky voice with a touch of sandpaper that sounded as if every word was soaked in sin.
That voice she hadn’t forgotten.
She clenched her hands so tightly that her nails dug into her palms. Hard.
What. The. Hell.
“I’ve really got to go, Marnie.”
Her stomach rolled so badly, she’d broken out in a sweat, and Lily thought she really was going to be sick.
Footsteps on the stairs below made her jump, and she gave Marnie a quick hug, still ignoring Jake as she quickly crossed the deck and tried to smile at Steven Edwards.
“I’m so sorry. I really need to get home. I just…I don’t feel well.” God, she was overdoing it. She gulped in some air. “I hope you understand.” The words came out in a jumbled mess, but Steven nodded and moved aside so she could escape into the house.
“Hey! Lily! What’s going on?” Jake’s question hung in the air.
Cain and Maggie were on the deck now, and her panic was such that for a moment Lily couldn’t breathe.
She didn’t glance back, and with her hand on the sliding glass doors, she spoke.
“I have to go home, Jake. I’ll call you later.”
She pushed her way into the house and ran across the smooth stone tiles until she reached the front door.
She yanked it open, slammed it shut behind her, and then rested against it for a moment.
Her entire body shook and she let out a high-pitched giggle that wouldn’t be out of place in the local loony bin. Feeling a bit light-headed, Lily smoothed the front of her pale-blue J. Mendel halter dress and pushed off from the door, her white Fendi flats making no sound as she crossed the porch and took the steps down.

Excerpt:
I toss the note in the trashcan, but it bounces off the rim and lands on the floor. Shit.
I consider the notion of trying to get up and get it, but decide against it. I’m too sore and it’s just not that important. Housekeeping can pick it up later.
However, before I can think any more on it, the tip of a shoe appears next to it. My gaze flickers upward and finds a girl standing there. She’s staring at me with clear, green eyes and she’s holding a vase of flowers.
And she’s fucking beautiful.
My gut immediately tightens in response. Holy shit.
She’s small, with long dark hair draped over one shoulder and clear green eyes framed in thick black lashes.
Her skin is bright and glowing. And why am I noticing her skin when she’s got such a great rack? I fight to keep my eyes away from her full, perky tits and focused on her face.
She smiles a wide, white smile. A gorgeous kind of smile.
“Hi,” she says softly. “I didn’t know you’d be awake.”
There is gentle familiarity in her voice, as if she knows me.
I’m confused. How fucked up had I been? Do I know this girl? My instincts say no. She’s not the kind of girl
I tend to hang around. I usually keep the needy ones around, the ones who are willing to do whatever I want, just because I can give them what they need.
This girl is not one of them. That much is blatantly apparent. She reeks of sunshine and wholesomeness. It’s foreign to me. And fascinating.
I cock my head.
“I’m sorry. Do I know you?”
The beautiful girl blushes now, a faint pink tint along the delicate curve of her cheek. I immediately have the urge to run my fingers along the color, although I don’t know why.
“No,” she answers and she seems embarrassed. “I know that this is probably weird. But I’m the one who found you on the beach. I came the other day to make sure that you were okay. And then I wanted to bring you some flowers because your room seemed a little bare. I’m an artist, so I love color. And now I seem like a stalker, don’t I?”
She’s rambling. And it’s cute as hell. I smile. And as I do, I feel like the Big Bad Wolf and she’s little Red Riding Hood. My, what big teeth I have.
I smile wider, especially when I realize that she’s even wearing a dark red shirt. And it’s stretched tightly across her perfect rack.
“It’s okay,” I assure her. “I like stalkers.”
Her head snaps up and her eyes meet mine, her gaze startled. I have to laugh again. Something about her seems so innocent. She’d truly be startled if she could hear my thoughts about her smoking hot body.
“Thank you for the flowers,” I tell her, chuckling. “They’re nice. You’re right. The room can definitely use some color. You can set them over there if you’d like.”
I motion toward my empty dresser. She moves in that direction, stopping to pick up the crumpled note from my father.
“Is this trash?” she asks innocently. I nod and she drops it in the wastebasket.
“Thanks,” I tell her. “That’s just where it belongs.”
She looks puzzled, but she doesn’t question my words. Instead, she places the flowers on the dresser, then sits in the chair next to me. And stares at me.
I stare back.
“What?” I ask her. “Why are you looking at me like that?”
She smiles. “I’m just happy to see your eyes open. I know this is going to sound stupid, but you were in a bad way on Goose Beach. And I haven’t been able to get those images out of my head. So it’s nice to see you wide awake and perfectly fine. I’ll have something to replace those bad images with now.”
Well, the idea that I’m perfectly fine is debatable. But I’m a little puzzled. She seems genuinely concerned, truly troubled. And she doesn’t even know me, so why should she care?
So I ask her that.
And she’s the one who’s puzzled now.
“Why wouldn’t I be?” she asks, and then she pulls on her full lip with her teeth. My gut clenches again as I catch a glimpse of her pink tongue. “Anyone would be concerned. And it was the first time that I’d ever tried CPR. I don’t even know if I did it right. And it was the first time I’d ever seen someone overdose. I wasn’t sure exactly what was wrong when I first found you. But you didn’t seem like you were just drunk. I’m glad I called the ambulance.”
I stare at her now.
“You called the ambulance?” Interesting. I wonder what the hell happened to Jill? She probably left me to die, the fucking whore. You get what you pay for, I guess. A few snorts of coke apparently don’t buy much.
Beautiful Girl nods. “Yes, I did. The girl who you were with wasn’t too happy about that. But I thought you needed it. And it turns out that you did.”
Ah, so Jill was there.
“There was a girl with me?” I raise an eyebrow, probing to find out what happened with Jill.
Beautiful Girl shakes her head. “Not at first. She came while I was trying to decide what to do. She was mad at you for something-until she saw the condition you were in. And then she got hysterical. She left when the paramedics arrived.”
That sounds about right.
“Well, thank you for calling help,” I tell her slowly, eyeing her, taking her all in. “I’m Pax, by the way.”
She smiles. “I know. Stalker, remember?”
I smile back. “Well, you have me at a disadvantage. Because I don’t know you.”
And that’s a damn shame.
She holds out her hand and I take it. Hers is small and soft, almost fragile.
“My name is Mila Hill. It’s very nice to meet you.”
And it is.
I know I should tell her to run far, far from me, but of course I don’t. She’s like a ray of sunshine in this bleak hospital room and I soak her up. She’s got good, healthy energy and I like the way it feels to talk with her.
She’s like a breath of fresh air.
I may be the Big Bad Wolf, but even wolves need to breathe.
