The first book in a new series by Author Tigris Eden. Beyond the Red Door, everything has a price.

Eons ago, the comet Biel passed through Earth’s atmosphere, depositing Travelers and leaving behind remnants that drastically altered the planet and its inhabitants. Hundreds of years later, mutation and evolution have left behind a desolate wasteland and dangers beyond comprehension.

The last remnants of the human race are clinging to life, living in the ruins of Earth’s major cities and struggling to survive. Technology is scarce, and what little remains comes from the very thing that almost destroyed them. Monsters roam the streets, and fear and duplicity rule.

The fallout from the comet has mutation spreading, disfiguring men and twisting their minds, turning them into carnivores and savages that threaten the city and its people. Amidst the chaos, one man rules as Sovereign and corners the market on both technology and trade. To Lavarious Diamond, everything is for sale or trade. The only question is how much it’s worth.

When a mysterious woman comes to the Quarry and promises a huge payday, Diamond’s tidy life is shaken up, and he finds himself uncharacteristically helping her. Along the way, secrets and deceit abound. When the truth comes out, nothing and nobody will ever be the same.

But her imagination and the voices inside her head never stopped talking. Every dream she could remember was jotted down in her dream journals.

She openly admits that what she may find beautiful another person might not, and she’s perfectly okay with that. She enjoys her music and doesn’t leave home without it. Long pillow conversations with LL about nonsensical things, and hanging out with her boys, when they deem her “cool enough.”

EXCERPT

She watched as he went for the can of peaches. The label was already peeled away, leaving behind a silver can rimmed with rust in the dents. When he lifted the top, the smell was the first thing to hit her senses. She’d never tasted peaches before, but her mouth certainly wanted to try.
Diamond dipped his fingers into the can. He pulled out a golden slice, slick with juice. She didn’t know what to expect when her lips met the fruit, but what she got was pure heaven. There was a slight tang, and then a flavor so full, so sweet, Nadya couldn’t help but moan. She shamelessly sucked on Diamonds fingers, trying to get more of the peach’s flavor. The saltiness of Diamond’s hand added to the glorious taste saturating her tongue.
Her eyes closed and a sound she’d never heard before vibrated beneath her chest and crawled up her throat, giving life to her already ravenous appetite. Her body swayed forward as Diamond yanked his fingers from her mouth, uttering a curse.
“That’s enough for today. You can eat the rest.” His voice was different. Broken. But Nadya tried not to focus on the sound of his voice. He’d said she could eat the rest of the sinfully delicious fruit. She dove in with gusto, not caring that she was acting like a wild animal. She sucked down slice after slice until there was nothing left.
Darkness began to settle fast. She followed closely behind Diamond and Lip as they talked about their next move. Every time Diamond’s hazel eyes fell on her, she felt he was blaming her for the entire ordeal back at the theater. It was Lindy who had alerted the Gearheads to their position and had gotten them attacked. Although, now that Nadya thought about it, maybe they’d known all along and were just waiting for the perfect moment to strike. Her gut told her Lindy was somehow the cause for everything. The way the male Clancy’s eyes had moved to her, seeking clarity meant something. Ragers were organized, their group more alert. She may not remember where she came from or who her real parents were, but she remembered being trained.
“We’re going to stop off at the house, spend the night there. We’ll slip through the back. You can alert the security detail we’ve arrived,” Nadya heard Diamond say to Lip, who wasn’t at all happy they were stopping at the house.
“I don’t think that’s a good idea,” Lip shot back.
“Why not?”
“Because too many variables are in play. Nadya may look stupid, but the girl is far from it. Have you seen the way she catalogues everything? Right down to the very last detail. If I didn’t know any better, I would think she was a Bionic or worse, a Splice.”
She wasn’t either of those things. She did check her surroundings. It was the only way she was assured she had all her options covered. If she didn’t, she’d end up dead or far worse. She wasn’t about to let her life end due to a clumsy mishap. Not if she could help it.
“I also have excellent hearing. It’s a trait developed for those of us with really small ears.”

REVIEW

This is not my first read by Ms. Eden, in fact I am a huge fan of her writing. This however, is a different kind of story. Ms. Eden has broadened her horizons and moved from adult fiction to distopian. I am not a huge fan of distopian but because I adore her writing I wanted to see if she could change my mind, and I am pleased to say she has indeed. Ms. Eden's writing voice is heard throughout and she will suck you into the future world that is gritty and ugly and it's a dog eat dog world.

Nadya is a women with secrets - secrets even she can't remember, she has flashes of who she is but they are vague recollections at the best. She is a fighter, she is a heroine for the times (only she doen't know it yet. She sets off on a mission to protect her adoptive family by selling her virginity to the highest bidder through Lavarious Diamond - he is a man in charge, a man of passions, and man not afraid to trade anything to get what he wants and needs. It is his world or so he thinks - it's a harsh place where everything and anything has a price.

Ms. Eden, will take you into her the depths of her mind and leave you screaming. I will warn you there is a cliff hanger of an ending that will make you scream for more! Well, done Tigris. If you are a fan of distopian then this is definitely worth the time - if your not and want to give it a try then Diamond is an awesome way to get your toes wet.

4/5 Review: Ravaged: An Eternal Guardians Novella (1001 Dark Nights) by Elisabeth Naughton

Ari--Once an Eternal Guardian, now he's nothing but a rogue mercenary with one singular focus: revenge. His guardian brothers all think he’s dead, but he is very much alive in the human realm, chipping away at Zeus’s Sirens every chance he can, reveling in his brutality and anonymity. Until, that is, he abducts the wrong female and his identity is finally exposed. It will take more than the Eternal Guardians, more even than the gods to rein Ari in after everything he’s done. It may just take the courage of one woman willing to stand up to a warrior who’s become a savage.

**********

This series follows the adventures of the Argonauts and their soulmates. Ms. Naughton uses mythology to create this wonderful world of characters and manages to make this series an awesome blend of action, suspense, and romance. I love the way unique way Ms. Naughton uses the traditional mythology  stories and makes them her own. Ravaged gives us the story of Ari and his disappearance from the Argonauts and introduces us to Daphne who is a captivating nymph that quickly captures Ari's heart.

I honestly have no negatives to convey. This book is perfect. The dialogue, the descriptions and most of all, the surprises, totally and completely worked. Not all the surprises were good, some were downright deadly. Some took the main characters completely unaware and they fought for their lives, more than once. One completely floored me and greatly affected Daphne and her relationship to Ari. I never saw it coming.

Ms. Naughton will make you feel like you are reading a full length novel with this novella. She manages to give us Ari and Daphne's complete story without her readers feeling like they are missing anything. She also had me on the edge of my seat until the very end wondering where else she was going with this series as a whole. She seamlessly wove the story and connected everything perfectly to carry into the next book. I cannot wait for the next book now. There are so many questions and new possibilities! This was a terrific installment in this series. It was amazing!

4/5 Review: Spider Game by Christine Feehan

The Cajun dive in the middle of the godforsaken swamps wasn’t exactly Trap Dawkins’ idea of fun. But the GhostWalker wasn’t there for a good time. He was looking for her. Cayenne. It’s where she found her victims. Poor suckers. Then again, who wouldn’t want to leave a place like this with a woman like her?

It’s not Cayenne’s fault. Locked up, experimented on and never knowing kindness, she was bred this way—with a heart of pure venom. Trap understands her. He survived his own dark past and he shares her desire for getting even. But now Trap’s greatest danger is Cayenne herself. Because what’s inside her is hard to control—especially when it’s aroused by a lover as reckless as Trap.

**********

Trap and Cayenne are both ghostwalkers that have been experimented on to form super humans.

Trap is a soldier who's special abilities make him an asset to his team, but his icy demeanor and rude attitude makes him hardly loveable. He's a brilliant scientists who's made himself a small fortune,  named one of the most eligible bachelors so he's a catch to any socialite who's only in it for the money and fame. But that's not what Trap wants, so he uses them and tosses them aside. Until he saves a fellow ghostwalker who's on the termination list. He can't get Cayenne off his mind, and he refuses to let her get away.

Cayenne has always been in solitude. Caged like an animal and experimented on her entire life. When she sees Trap she lures him into freeing her from her cage in the termination area. Only she can't seem to leave the area as she's continuously drawn back to the swamp and Trap. Will the two opposites attract?

So this is the first time I've ever read a book by Christine  (I know, I know!) And I have to say, I'm kinda bummed I grabbed this one. And maybe it's my own fault, I should have taken the title more seriously. The story is written well, some things are a bit repetitive,  but I enjoyed her writing. Miss Feehan's books are made of awesomeness!!!

However... Cayenne had her DNA mixed with a spider.... I HATE spiders. Reading some of these scenes were extremely hard for me to swallow. I generally enjoy shifter books, but not of the insect variety. So that alone made this drop a point for me.

The storyline was great, and if the other books in this series stay away from (most) bugs, I'll definitely be adding this to my TBR list.

5/5 Review: The Truth About Him by M. O'Keefe

We played our roles, told each other lies.

But now Dylan is no longer just a mysterious deep voice on the other end of the line. We’re face-to-face and our relationship is very, very real.

We still have secrets—but so much is crystal clear:

The thrilling danger.

The raw, naked desire.

The need to keep feeling the way he makes me feel. Forever.

Dylan is putting up walls, trying to keep me safe, but he can’t shut me out. He has seen my darkness and rescued me. Now it’s my turn, if only he will let me.

**********

Dylan is a rich man with a dark past. He has a lot of secrets and Annie is peeling them back one at a time and willing to help heal his icy heart.

Annie isn't withouther own secrets and a dark past... only her past has literally come to fine her. When Dylan helps save Annie he's afraid his dark past may bring her down, and after everything she's been through he's reluctant to keep her too close.

This is a 2 part series, and "the truth about him" is part 2. This book literally starts out with instant action and keeps you glued to your spot and keeps you continuously turning the pages.

It was a bit of a rough start for me as I didn't read the first book, so I had to figure a lot of things out along the way. Luckily the author is great at catching you up, without seemingly annoying a return reader (I would assume anyway!)

The entire book was well written and kept me entertained, I enjoyed the variety of characters that always kept me guessing, and the bonds between them. If you enjoyed the first book (as I assume I would too) then you'll definitely fall in love with the conclusion. But if you didn't, the book is still a great book and worth the read (but maybe grab the first one too!)

5/5 Review: Shameless by Joan Johnston

HER SHAMEFUL PAST MAKES HER AN OUTCAST—
UNTIL A LONE WOLF TAKES HER INTO HIS HOME.

Scorned, pregnant, and facing a life without promise, Pippa Grayhawk is stunned when her father announces that they’re leaving their home in Australia to take over his estranged father’s sprawling Wyoming ranch. Drawn into bitter family rivalries and feeling like an interloper in her new home, Pippa rides out into the wilderness and meets an intriguing stranger and his pet wolf. The wolf doesn’t scare her, but she’s very much afraid to trust another man with her heart.

Devon Flynn knows all about going it alone. He lives in an isolated cabin, away from his domineering father and the scandal surrounding his family. Devon’s attraction to Pippa is intoxicating and undeniable, but when he tries to get close, she’s as wary as his once-wild wolf. Devon is willing to defy his father, and hers, to claim Pippa as his own, but winning this wounded, wonderful woman’s love might be the greatest battle of all.

**********

Pippa had a good life in Australia where she lived with her father and brother. She fell in love with one of her fathers workmen on his ranch. She finds out that he is married after she discovers that she is pregnant. Her father moves them all back to the states to inherit his fathers ranch. She vows she will never fall for another man. Until she meets Devon she does just that. Something about him makes her want to trust him and be with him. She hides her pregnancy from him.

Devon lives alone and nurses sick animals back to health. He's always felt like he didn't belong in his family. He finds out his mother that died in birth actually had cheated on her husband with his biological father. When he meets pippa he can't help but feel attracted to her. When she comes to live with him to avoid her father after she finds out the truth about her own mother, they get really close to one another.

I really liked this book! From the moment I picked it up and started reading I had a hard time putting it down! You get sucked into the story quickly. I felt bad for pippa when that so called love of hers just up and walks out on her when he finds out she's pregnant with his child. They had to leave Australia to move to the states and live at her grandfather's ranch. If her father lives there for a year he gets to inherit the family land.

When she first meets Devon you could feel the attraction that they have between each other. Throughout their time together I kept thinking tell him your pregnant already! It was driving me crazy! I know why she kept it to herself. She didn't feel like she could trust another man. Devon ends up finding out through his father. They end up fighting about it and she takes off to go live with her mother that she found out had not died during childbirth like everyone had said.

They end up finding each other again when a wildfire breaks out near their homes and a family member from each of their families has gone missing fighting the fire. Long story short they finally admit they love each other!

Along the way Devon is reunited with his biological father and pippa with her mother. It really was a great book! I'm actually really excited about the next one so I can find out what happens to the two people that were lost in the wildfire! It never said if they were alive or not. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves Cowboys and romance!

4/5 Review: After She's Gone by Lisa Jackson

Cassie Kramer and her younger sister, Allie, learned the hazards of fame long ago. Together, they’d survived the horror of a crazed fan who nearly killed their mother, former Hollywood actress Jenna Hughes. Still, Cassie moved to L.A., urging Allie to follow. As a team, they’d take the town by storm. But Allie, finally free of small-town Oregon, and just that little bit more beautiful, also proved to be more talented—and driven. Where Cassie got bit parts, Allie rose to stardom. But now her body double has been shot on the set of her latest movie—and Allie is missing.

Police discover that the last call to Allie’s phone came from Cassie, though she has no recollection of making it. Instead of looking like a concerned relative, Cassie is starting to look like a suspect—the jealous sister who finally grew sick of playing a supporting role. As the tabloids go into a frenzy, Cassie ends up on a Portland psych ward. Is she just imagining the sinister figure who comes to her bedside, whispering about Allie—a visitor of whom there is no record? Is someone trying to help—or drive her mad?

Convinced she’s the only one who can find Allie, Cassie checks herself out of the hospital. But a sudden slew of macabre murders— each victim masked with a likeness of a member of Cassie’s family—makes Cassie fear for her safety and her sanity. The only way to end the nightmare is to find out what really happened to Allie. And with each discovery, Cassie realizes that no one can be trusted to keep her safe—least of all herself…

**********

This was truly a strong suspense novel. I realize that it's billed as a "romantic suspense" but trust me there is hardly any romance to be found in these pages so those of you that are scared off by the idea of romance will be safe in picking up this title. There were a lot of character's but I don't think there were so many that one could not keep track of what was going on. Really I feel that each character did play it's part in the telling of the story. The story line was excellent and the characters carried with them enough baggage to help you understand their actions. The suspense was awesome and kept me guessing until the very end.

This novel is everything I enjoy about reading: characters who act their age, romance that seems natural and realistic, a mystery that makes you change you mind about "whodunnit" a dozen times before it is revealed, high stakes, I could go on and on.

I like that the characters had a past. It sounds complicated, but it helps the reader follow the story, rather than complicate everything by throwing in flash backs. I have read plenty of novels by this author, and she has a definite style. Even the novels she writes with her equally talented sister, Nancy Bush, there is a definite difference, although it does not distract from the story. I think I only notice because I have read novels by both sisters. On a related note, HUSH by Nancy Bush is awesome. The genre is the same, and it's a great novel.

Lisa Jackson writes lengthy books, so you get a lot for the price. The only drawback is that some of her books can drag in places, but never for long, and it always goes somewhere. She had a few series that I recommend, although my all time favorite books of hers are the ones set in Oregon.

The twists and turns in this book are hard to predict and keep things very unsettling. Just when you think you know what’s going to happen, you’re wrong. I was on the edge of my seat until the very end. It’s been awhile since I have read a suspense novel this good. The characters are very well written and I was truly invested in what happens to them. Leah portrays a strong woman that fights very hard to regain her footing after spending the past 4 years still looking over her shoulder. Cassie Kramer is our heroine, who is the daughter of former well known Hollywood actress. Cassie and her sister, Allie tried to follow in their mother’s footsteps, with Allie becoming a star. Cassie  decides that she is the only one able to find her sister. I just may have to go back and read the other books in the series to get to know them better.

Excerpt

Suddenly, a strong hand gripped her wrist, and in less than a second, he’d pulled her to her feet. Stark need tightened his features, but he released her and turned away. A wave of fury crashed over her, and she drew in a sharp hiss of air. The son of a bitch didn’t have the courage to love her, even though she knew he wanted to.

Every fiber in the man’s body was drawn to her, and he didn’t have the guts to admit it. A growl rumbled out of him as he slowly turned to face her. Her gaze flitted from the horrible disfigurement of his demonic side to his angelic profile, which was drawn up hard with anger. She glared at him.

“What?” she said angrily.

He didn’t answer her. Instead, he stepped back into her, his fingers slipping between her breasts to the fragile strip of material holding her bra cups together. The touch made her gasp, and she was suddenly aware of the cool air on her shoulders. She’d been so determined to chew him out that she’d forgotten she wasn’t wearing a shirt.

The heat of his fingers pressed against her skin, and with a sharp tug, his fingers broke the bra, the cups sliding off her breasts to expose her completely. Her immediate reaction was to cover herself. She’d been expecting him to pull her toward him, not undress her.

At least not yet.

She reached out with her senses and caught the faintest whisper of something dark. It was a part of him, and yet she could tell he fought it constantly. Surprised by it, she retreated from him until her back was against the wall. A savage look tightened his ravaged profile, and his unmarred side reflected an emotion she couldn’t describe.

Invisible hands caught her wrists and pulled them up over her head to pin them to the wall. She drew in a quick breath of surprise but didn’t take her eyes off his face. The terrible emotion he was struggling with wouldn’t win, she was certain of it. He would never hurt her. His features darkened, and he moved forward to brush his mouth over her shoulder. A primitive noise rumbled out of him.

“Is this what you want, Phaedra? A half man, half monster?”

With a turn of his head, he gave her a magnified view of his horribly scarred face. There was no eye patch to hide the eyelid sealed shut over the indentation where his eye had once been. From his scalp to his jaw, the twisted flesh was there for her to see in all its glory. His marred flesh broke her heart, not because of what he looked like, but because of the bleak note in his voice. His pain was deep. So far down, she wondered if her love was strong enough to help heal his spirit.
